Small Blue Thing Lyrics

Today I am
A small blue thing
Like a marble
Or an eye

With my knees against my mouth
I am perfectly round
I am watching you

I am cold against your skin
You are perfectly reflected
I am lost inside your pocket
I am lost against
Your fingers

I am falling down the stairs
I am skipping on the sidewalk
I am thrown against the sky

I am raining down in pieces
I am scattering like light
Scattering like light
Scattering like light

Today I am
A small blue thing
Made of china
Made of glass

I am cool and smooth and curious
I never blink
I am turning in your hand
Turning in your hand
Small blue thing

It could be about love...But like everyone else, I have my own interpretation.

I think it's more likely about surviving abuse, particularly the numb, detached feeling a lot of abuse survivors get. And the lines about scattering down in pieces could very well be about when that numbness breaks apart and you feel the pain again.

Also, the part about "My knees against my mouth, I am perfectly round" makes me also think this because you curl up.

This song - and Suzanne's two albums "Solitude Standing" and "Suzanne Vega" have been with me since birth.

I know this isn't about the song...but i adore her music. It's been such a huge part of my life, though i've never seen her in concert...just these few songs, such as this.

I think this song isn't about any object at all - rather, an emotion, or she as a person - her personality. Maybe not suzanne in particular, but someone...

beautiful artist, beautiful song.

I think the song is about the way someone makes her feel. She is probably in love with that person and she compares herself to something so small, like a marble in his pocket. He has control over her because of the way he makes her feel. The part where she sings about her being thrown against the sky and she's raining down in pieces is sort of like the beautiful feeling of being in love. It's a love song in my opinion and it's beautiful.

I agree with kristina ks, but I think it's not only about the way he makes her feel. It's also the confusing part of being in love. It's not always the same, it's changes. "Today I am": yesterday she was something different and tomorrow she'll be something else. "I am thrown against the sky, I am raining down in pieces": sometimes he lifts her up, sometimes she's broken by the pain.
