South Australia Lyrics

In South Australia I was born
Heave away, haul away
South Australia 'round cape Horn
We're bound for South Australia

Chorus;
Haul away you rolling kings
Heave away, haul away
Haul away and you'll hear me sing
And we're bound for South Australia

As I walked out one morning fair
Heave away, haul away
Oh I changed to meet with Nancy Blair
We're bound for South Australia

Well I shook her up and I shook her down
Heave away, haul away
I danced her round and round the town
We're bound for South Australia

There ain't one king but grieves my mind
Heave away, haul away
Is to leave sweet Nancy Blair behind
We're bound for South Australia

I wish I was on some lonesome strand
Heave away, haul away
With rum and whiskey all in my hand
We're bound for South Australia

Two old woman sleepin' on the sand
Heave away, haul away
Each one wishing that the other was a man
And we're bound for South Australia

As we warped around the cape Horn
Heave away, haul away
Oh you wish to Christ you never was born
We're bound for South Australia

This is a traditional Australian song.

I remember them playing this as one of their opening numbers on their first Australian tour in 88, and it absolutely brought the house down.

You can imagine all the sailors working to this song, hey? Clownfish is very lucky to have seen The Pogueson tour in Australia, I'm afraid I was born a decade or two too late for that! Perhaps on the come-back tour . . .

Well I just missed out :( The Pogues cancelled their part in the lineup of The Great Escape festival in Australia because of financial difficulties.

I gather from the lyrics that this is a song about convicts on their way to South Australia. However, South Australia was settled as a colony for free men and thus no convicts were sent out :) Little known historical fact.

This is actually a trad Irish song, not Australian. like the person before me said, it's about convicts sailing to South Australia to start a new life. A great song, with driving rhythm. It was wonderfully done by The Clancy Brothers as well. Love it!
