Far Away Boys Lyrics

Well I worked on the railroad
For t’pence a day
Drank down one penny
The other I’d save
I hammered and I hammered
For God knows how long
Well into madness, with each setting sun
I put my head down and I dreamt you were here
With me by the ol’ tree, where no one could care

Far Away Boys, Far Away Boys
Away from ya now
I’m lyin’ with my sweetheart
In her arms I’ll be found

Then the sun belched upon me
You were no longer here
Lyin’ in your place was my hammer and my gear
So I stamped out the fire that kept us both warm
The ashes were fallin’
Like the snow drops of old
We came to a mountain
Dynamite and she’ll blow
A big hole in that rock
Like the one in my soul

Far Away Boys, Far Away Boys
Away from ya now
I’m lyin’ with my sweetheart
In her arms I’ll be found

We buried four workmen
They dug themselves well
>From four empty coffins, to four early graves
They’re only paddys, just paddys
Don’t dig them too deep
You’ll need all your strength boys
And they’re replaced easily
With the heat I was melting
Into your sweet lips
Ah, your kiss takes me back
Takes me back from all this

Far Away Boys, Far Away Boys
Away from ya now
I’m lyin’ with my sweetheart
In her arms I’ll be found

Someone said it was Christmas
But not a tree was in sight
The only thing growin’ was my will to die
Till the gaffer said ‘men, your work here is done’
I said ‘I’ll see you in Hell, on that train we died for’
Never again, will I smell your sweet dream
But a pissed stained ol’ gutter where…
You lips used to be

Far Away Boys, Far Away Boys
Away from ya now
I’m lyin’ with my sweetheart
In her arms I’ll be found

During the industrial revolution, specifically the transport revolution and the railway boom, workers wer brought into england from ireland and scotland as migrant workers were cheaper than english workers. These workers were called "navvies". They had an extremely poor reputation and were portrayed as drunks, explaining the line "Drank down one penny" and also helps to show the measly wages they were paid. The work they did was very dangerous and lots of them were killed when blasting through rock, hence the end of the second and start of the third verse.

Yeah that explains most of the confusing stuff about the song. I think? other than that it's a lovesong, an awesome one at that. and the guy in the song's girl may have died or still be in Ireland...well i think thats pretty much everything :-)

sorry for the essay but it was neccessary to explain it all :-)

This song is amazing. I've listened to many of there other songs, but when this one came up it hit me hard. Such a sad song. "We came to a mountain. Dynamite and she’ll blow a big hole in that rock. Like the one in my soul" Just beautiful...

Good lord, this song. Well I'll say it like this, sometimes with songs it's hard to know what they're saying, this song is just great. How Dave (writer and vocalist and acoustic) tells the stories about how all the Irish people got crap jobs are were treated like they weren't human. Poor guy in the song, wants his girl back. i love this song

This is the absolute greatest song that Flogging Molly has done. Seriously, it's so beautiful, and so tragic. The emo kids just wish they could make sadness this profound.

this says so much about the troubles in ireland, and what the members of the working class went through... it makes me respect my grandfather and his rellies so much, because this was basically a lot of what their lives revolved around
