The Last Day of Summer Lyrics

Nothing I am
Nothing I dream
Nothing is new

Nothing I think or believe in or say
Nothing is true

It used to be so easy, I never even tried
Yeah, it used to be so easy
But the last day of summer, never felt so cold
The last day of summer, never felt so old
Never felt so

All that I have
All that I hold
All that is wrong

All that I feel for or trust in or love
All that is gone

It used to be so easy, I never even tried
Yeah, it used to be so easy
But the last day of summer, never felt so cold
The last day of summer, never felt so old
The last day of summer, never felt so cold
Never felt so

Why does every song need to be about a relationship!?!?! :::frustrated::: This song, to me, is about aging and being depressed about life nearing an end. Despite enjoying being "wise" and knowledgable (experiencing so much), things are far more difficult, and with each passing season (even Summer), the days seem to be colder (as most people age, they get cold more easily as well...it works on two levels). All of your dreams were likely not accomplished (or they feel meaningless knowing that nothing we do really lasts), and all you believe will probably be wrong (if it isn't already) as others learn more... This is the feeling of a great Blues song in great Rock form (one of my favorites on the disk with the meaning behind it). He has celebrated aging, and this is a great contrast to that, which fits well on this album!

yup it's defenitely about aging ''never felt so old'' and 'it used to be so easy'

Best intro ever. I love this song, quite possibly one of the most emotionally impacting pieces of music I've ever heard.

@juiceman46 So true, just an amazing intro...

i love the last day of summer and living on borrowed time and knowing that everything good you have is aobut to end but enjoying it all more than you even could imagine possible, and then making plans for it to last longer and to cheat the last day of summer. Yeah thats what id do id have so much fun id cheat the last day of summer out of its sadness.

Hmm I think it is about the reality of getting older (all of Bloodflowers for that matter), the cyncism, the wimsy and the wisdom. It's not all bad, it's not all good. he's at that age where he looks back and sees mush of what he has done is superficial and asks a few questions of himself. In relation to The Cure, yes it's harder, physically, mentally, emotionally. Will it end? Can I keep doing this? Do I need to?

Anyway, world tour 2014 in the pipeline so questions answered.

This song could be about a billion different things ending but I think I have 2 good ideas

One, Robert might have been writing about not having anything more to write/sing about and that everything he writes about now is just a lie because it doesn't come easy to him anymore.

Two, Or I'm sure most of us will interpret it into a relationship type setting...I can see how the lyrics work that someone asked someone else out or were going out and that person has been rejected.

I really don't think the song is about "borrowed time" and knowing it is about to end. I think the song is more of a surprise, "this isn't how it's supposed to be" type song. Any day of summer is never cold...but this one is. It's a shock...you can hear the pain in his voice and the verses.

NOTHING I AM NOTHING I DREAM NOTHING IS NEW NOTHING I THINK IN OR BELIEVE IN OR SAY NOTHING IS TRUE

I'TS FUNNY HOW SOMETIMES WE THINK WE HAVE SOMETHING, OR SOMEONE, HOW SURE WE ARE THAT THEY ARE THERE, WE ARE SO USED TO THEM BEING AROUND THAT YOU NEVER EXPECT ANY CHANGE, I AGREE W/NAILERK YOU WOULD NEVER EXPECT A SUMMER DAY TO BE COLD. YOU WOULD NEVER EXPECT SOMETHING BEAUTIFUL TO HAVE AN END, BUT ALL THAT IS GONE...

not so much the lyrics, but the feeling evoked from the melody, reminds me of 1995, a summer i spent with my brother towards the ends before school started again. it just rings oh so very nostalgic and beautiful. heartbreaking and meloncholia in a sense.

the way i see it is that nothing you believe in or want to think is right or cool is the right thing...your always wrong and it never is going to work. you can put this into a relationship ideal or other ones but to me it is a relationship. no matter how much i want it to work or be real...it will just end..like summer.

I don't interprit this song as a relationship song. To me, this song represents what the end of summer means. I experienced that quite recently. Summer was the best time of my life, i had the most amazing life and somehow, on the last day of summer, I knew it was the end of all that and I was right. It's mourning the loss of a brilliant period of your life whre everything is carefree. And then it goes cold.

This is a very sad song. Dark. Desperate. Sometimes when I cannot see any hope, this song is my heart voice.
