September is when school and university starts.
This song is about a guy who stayed together with a girl when school started, but instead of finding that they talk and call each other to let each other know that they care, the guy find that the girl is just trying to provoke his jealousy. Or at least this is how he perceived it.
He still loves her, but part of him wishes that they just broke things off before they parted...
Agree with other interpretations. This song could have been written about my ex girlfriend and I. She was insecure and I was very in love with her. Anytime she felt threatened she turned outside of the relationship looking for external validation to demonstrate to me exactly how much everyone liked her and how she didn't actually need to ever deal with the root causes of her insecurity. It was excruciating and ultimately an impossible situation for me, always wondering why attention from people who were not as close to her was preferable to what I had to offer.
