This song started out, according to John, as a song that his mother used to sing to him, based on the Disney film, Snow White and the 7 Dwarfs. In one of the opening scenes of the film, Snow White is wokring as a kitchen maid, and, as she stands by the castle well, she begins to sing to the doves "Wanna know a secret? Promise not to tell? We are standing by a wishing well." (I'm Wishing, by Money/Churchill.)
A demo of this track was made by John in the bathroom with an acoustic guitar (it's obvious that it's a bathroom - a few hundred bucks says nobody knows why).
Although the song was written by John with his own voice in mind, the song was offered to George. According to John, "I thought this was the perfect vehicle for George's voice, as it only had three notes in it, and George wasn't the world's greatest singer."

I love this song. I like the Beatles. This song makes me happy as soon as I hear it. I can't help but smile. Sometimes at school, I'll start singing this song, then my friends will join in. (Not something you see a lot among a bunch of 15 year old girls, but whatever.) This song kicks butt!
George is the best Beatle.
This is a cute song, especially when George sings it. :) I think John pretty much wrote it as a bog standard love song, about nothing in particular and never considered it to be great (hence giving it to George). It's already been said that he wrote it in imitation of a disney song his Mum would sing to him, but other then this, I don't think he put much thought into it. Despite that, I still think it's a pretty cool song. And who doesn't love George's singing? I wish he could've song it to me! ;)
