He waits for her to understand
But she won't understand at all
She waits all night for him to call
But he won't call anymore
He waits to hear her say
"Forgive"
But she justs drops her pearl-black eyes
And prays to hear him say
"I love you"
But he tells no more lies
He waits for her to sympathize
But she won't sympathize at all
She waits all night to feel his kiss
But always wakes alone
He waits to hear her say
"Forget"
But she just hangs her head in pain
And prays to hear him say
"No more
I'll never leave again"
How did we get this far apart?
We used to be so close together
How did we get this far apart?
I thought this love would last for ever
He waits for her to understand
But she won't understand at all
She waits all night for him to call
But he won't call
He waits to hear her say
"Forgive"
But she just drops her pearl black eyes
And prays to hear him say
"I love you"
But he tells no more lies
How did we get this far apart?
We used to be so close together
How did we get this far apart?
I thought this love would last for ever
But she won't understand at all
She waits all night for him to call
But he won't call anymore
He waits to hear her say
"Forgive"
But she justs drops her pearl-black eyes
And prays to hear him say

This song speaks simply and powerfully about the way communication breaks down between two people who were in loving but are drifting apart - they each wish the other to do something or say something they desperately want to hear, but they don't tell each other what that thing is...they just wait and hope it happens, but it never does. The almost telepathic communication of young intense love has gone, and they haven't learnt to bridge the gap. After 21 years of marriage, I can feel it happening all the time, the silences, the expectations that come to nought, the hope of love returning slowly dying...
I don't think this song is about cheating. He wants to be forgiven because he doesn't love her anymore. And he doesnt understand why they've grown apart.
Robert Smith said somewhere it was about "watching other people, and how every relationship has this huge, aching hole in the middle of it."
Truly beautiful and haunting, one Wish's redeeming features (along with From the Edge of the Deep Green Sea, of course.) If you're going to hang yourself, this is the song to die with.
This is what "man" typically does to himself. Through miscommunication and misunderstanding, pride and stubborness he/she places themself in a hole that they aren't willing to get out of. When somthing as important as love is hurt and damaged what else can you do....fatalism.
I don't know how true this is, and I gave "The Edge" a different meaning, but I always liked how since "The Edge" was the next track, it felt like the continuation of a story of two lovers.
After about half a year, it's still hard for me to hear this song. The only difference now is I don't wait for him to call anymore. The ultimate break-up song, no doubt about it. One of my favorite Cure solos also.
But if you keep on listening to this song, Trust, From the Edge of the Deep Green Sea, Letter to Elisse, To Wish Impossible Things, Cut, End, then that's another story. There are other songs like these I just named, but they came in handy since I'm listening to wish and I have just ended a relationship I thought "would last forever"
At some point the guy loved her but doesn't love her anymore and wants her to forgive him for not loving her anymore and forget the past. However, she can't because she still loves him and asks him "how did we get so far apart? We used to be so close together. How did we get this far apart? I thought we'd last forever." During this whole time she waits and prays for him to return to say and do the things he used to do like kiss her and say I love you. She is in pain and can't sympathize for him because she doesn't understand why he feels like he doesn't love her anymore.
I don't believe the song has anything to do with love and never has, but it's a good song and the band is obviously talented.

I really can't belive that no one has commented on this one yet.
I think the meaning of this song is pretty apparent. Its a break-up song. However, I dont belive any other break up song has ever so eloquently laid bare the act of breaking up, or been so monumentally depressing. This is quite possibly the most depressing song I've ever heard. Between the woodwinds, the simple drums, and the haunted lyrics whispered a half second behind Robert Smiths' voice... it really brings you down.
wow, i fell in love with this song the first time i heard it....i didn't know any of the words, i just listened to the music and i loved it....then i got to knowing the words and now, i cry everytime i hear it..
