Never Enough Lyrics
However much I push it down
It's never enough
However much I push it around
It's never enough
However much I make it out
It's never enough
Never enough
However much I do
However big I ever feel
It's never enough
Whatever I do to make it real
It's never enough
In any way I try to speak
It's never enough
Never enough
However much I try to speak
It's never enough
However much I'm falling down
It's never enough
However much I'm falling out
It's never enough
Whatever smile I smile the most
It's never enough
Never enough
However I smile
I smile the most
So let me hold it up
Just one more go
Holding it up for just once more
One more time to fill it up
One more time to kill
But whatever I do
It's never enough
It's never enough
It's never enough
It's never enough
However much I push it around
It's never enough
However much I make it out
It's never enough
Never enough
However much I do
It's never enough
Whatever I do to make it real
It's never enough
In any way I try to speak
It's never enough
Never enough
However much I try to speak
It's never enough
It's never enough
However much I'm falling out
It's never enough
Whatever smile I smile the most
It's never enough
Never enough
However I smile
I smile the most
Just one more go
Holding it up for just once more
One more time to fill it up
One more time to kill
But whatever I do
It's never enough
It's never enough

I think this song is about trying too hard to make a relationship work when it's obviously doomed to failure. The narrator is determined to make it work with the girl, but no matter how much he does for this purpose, it's never enough because they're just not right for one another. I think the first verse is about their sex life not being up to much, and 'However I smile I smile the most' means he always smiles more than her, because he's trying to create the idea they have a good relationship.
@MaskOfSanity Oh So Wrong this, Mask of Sadness.

@Nereus I wrote the above comment 12 years ago so hardly remembered it and have long since changed my opinion on the meaning of this song. I do appreciate the intelligent, mature and insightful response though.

i think it's self explanatory. andi dont think its just about sex as some people have suggested... just simply never enough of everything (even pain -- "however much i'm falling down it's never enough")
"want" is kind of the same a lot of vague allusions to never feeling content, never having enough excitement and pleasure and drama going on.
Here's what Smith said regarding "Never Enough":
"The song is about excess. Anything I do is not enough, there always has to be something else or you'd stop, and the fact that there is always something else drives you into excess. We recorded four songs and they sounded like crap, and I was really depressed. Everyone knew it wasn't working. I wrote Never Enough that night and said, 'Let's record this.'"
Let's ask him, anyone got his email?
@Nereus more fun trying to interpret your way ... and most artists who write quite "open" pieces of art prefer the individual to interpret it in their own way, rather than be told how

i have read and re-read this song over a dozen+ times and i can't figure it out. if you just glance at it not looking for any real meaning, sex could be it's meaning.
i think it's more than that, though. explanation, anybody?
this is one of my favorite cure songs. so good. and very heavy for them. this song is just done perfectly...
I dunno, I thought too first that it was about sex, but then I saw the video, and it made me think again. It can be that the video doesn't mean anything, oh I dont know... Lots of curevideos on www.launch.yahoo.com
This is one of those songs that I don't even care about what the meaning is supposed to be. It's easily my favourite Cure song because A) it sounds great B) it sums my life up to a T, and that's good enough for me, heh.
this song is bout sex lol my mom was like this song talks bout nasty stuff im liek ya oh so nasty
@mistressbrittany Well you did it - Sex with your Mom? In one sentence? You must be an teenager who's never heard about Freud or Edipe Re.

I think it's just a song about having an addictive personality.
I saw:
"But whatever I do It's never enough"
as a summary.
