Last Dance Lyrics

I'm so glad you came
I'm so glad you remembered
To see how we're ending
Our last dance together
Expectant
Too puctual
But prettier than ever
I really believe that this time it's forever

But older than me now
More constant
More real
And the fur and the mouth and the innocence
Turned to hair and contentment
That hangs in abasement
A woman now standing where once
There was only a girl

I'm so glad you came
I'm so glad you remembered
The walking through walls in the heart of December
The blindness of happiness
Of falling down laughing
And I really believed that this time was forever

But Christmas falls late now
Flatter and colder
And never as bright as when we used to fall
All this in an instant
Before I can kiss you
A woman now standing where once
There was only a girl

I'm so glad you came
I'm so glad you remembered
To see how we're ending
Our last dance together
Reluctantly
Cautiously
But prettier than ever
I really believe that this time it's forever

But Christmas falls late now
Flatter and colder
And never as bright as when we used to fall
And even if we drink
I don't think we would kiss in the way that we did
When the woman
Was only a girl

I rather think the believe-believed thing is about the first feeling of seeing someone again and relive that passion (I really believe), but then realizing that things have changed and understanding that it's not possible anymore (I really believed) The fact that he begins with "I'm so glad" makes this song even more sad to me.

I am not going to repeat what you all already said, but wanted to mention that in the beggining he say "I really believed this time was for ever" probably talking about being with her when he was younger and then in the end "I really believe that this time is for ever" he must talk about not being with her anymore now it is forever

Regret and nostalgia.

He's with a person that he's still wildly in love with--but she's not the same person anymore. And while he remembers over and over how much fun they had and how beautiful she was--and still is--he knows that he can never recreate that love and passion they had then.

It's about regretting change and missing the past.

Beautiful song. just about the great times he had with this girl. and how he sees her now after some odd years and now she's older. probably mentally older. and he still thinks she's beautiful. but the fact that she's 'older', he can't get over the fact that she changed and moved on probably. and in the end, he wants things to be how they used to be between him and her, but unfortunately they can't. "And never as bright as when we used to fall And even if we drink I don't think we would kiss in the way that we did" just pretty much says that, she's changed and he must move on "when the woman, was only a girl..." how she used to be.. such a sad song. i love it

It makes me think about seeing a past love after so many years and having all those past feelings come flooding back. At the same time that those feelings come back he can't help but notice how time has changed them and the passion they shared. He wants to kiss her and feel as if nothing has changed but he knows it can never happen.

Looking at some of the lines like "And the fur and the mouth and the innocence" "The blindness of happiness Of falling down laughing" makes me think this past love was from teenage years.

I imagine a meeting between me and an old girlfriend that I was with almost 3 years - a decade back. I don’t know anything about her now. But we both would be much more grown up now - totally different in a positive way I do guess too. Melancholy, lost opportunities, a part of my life lived and gone.

I always thought it was about a ghost. He is dead (walking through walls) waiting for her to come back and they dance every year, perhaps on the anniversary of his death? Just speculation there. Reminds me of Edward Scissorshands: he stayed young, as she grew older.

I've always thought the song meant the visit of a daughter to her father's grave. The father (Robert) is somewhat able to feel her presence, he feels her "prettier than ever", "older than me now" as she probably has more age now than the age at when he died.

"I'm so glad you came I'm so glad you remembered The walking through walls in the heart of December"

These ones above can be understood as the visit to the graveyard, usually in Christmas and such important dates in the calendar. "Walking through walls" could also refer on how do the modern graveyards look like.

"The blindness of happiness Of falling down laughing"

To me, these two lines mean how they used to play when she was a child.

"All this in an instant before I can kiss you".

By being dead, the father has no real sense of the pass of time, therefore it will be an instant until she is dead too and both meet again, so he will be able to kiss her.

Then the last two lines of the song kind of kill my theory, but I will still understand it like this.
