Sitting at the railway station
Reading books about intimidation
Waiting for my girl to come
And if she does will she be dumb
Or really smart
Will she break my heart
And wad it up and throw it in my face
I knew I'd find a nice girl someday
Find a nice girl

Settle down
Someone I can talk to
Someone I don't have to talk to
Someone who'll gimme time and gimme space
And take it all away sitting at the bus station
Reading books about legislation
Suddenly my girl comes
And she's not even dumb
In fact she's kinda smart
Will she break my heart
And wad it up and throw it in my face
I knew I'd find a nice girl someday
Find a nice girl

Settle down
Someone I can talk to
Someone I don't have to talk to
Someone who'll gimme time and gimme space and take it all away
Actually I've never even been to a railroad station even though I used to live near one
And still I'm waiting for my girl to come
And if she does will she be dumb
Or really smart
Will she break my heart
And wad it up and throw it in my face
Wad it up and throw it in my face
I knew I'd find a nice girl someday
Find a nice girl

Settle down
Someone I can talk to
Someone I don't have to talk to
Someone I can talk to
Someone I don't have to talk to
Someone I can talk to
Someone I don't have to talk to
Someone I can talk to
Someone I don't have to talk to
Someone I can talk to
Someone I don't have to talk to
Someone I can talk to

built to spill took to words right out of my mouth. What more could you want... someone to talk to, not to talk to, someone who will give time, space and take everything away.. This is the story of my life! ANd a really good melody as well!

He reuses the verse melody from the previous album's "Dirty Little Religion", the topics of the verses are all over the place, and he packs too many words into one line (goes to show...) and too few in another (it's pretty hard to find), and rhymes "Henley Regatta" with "Persona non grata", but gets away with it all as only he could.

The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.

Overall about difficult moments of disappointment and vulnerability. Having hope and longing, while remaining optimistic for the future. Encourages the belief that with each new morning there is a chance for things to improve. The chorus offers a glimmer of optimism and a chance at a resolution and redemption in the future. Captures the rollercoaster of emotions of feeling lost while loving someone who is not there for you, feeling let down and abandoned while waiting for a lover. Lost with no direction, "Now I'm up in the air with the rain in my hair, Nowhere to go, I can go anywhere" The bridge shows signs of longing and a plea for companionship. The Lyrics express a desire for authentic connection and the importance of Loving someone just as they are. "Just in passing, I'm not asking. That you be anyone but you”
