All the songs I have sung you
More often than you know
Cos you're the love that I've clung to
More often than I've let it show
And then I wish you would leave me
And then I wish you would go
And then I wish you didn't need me
And I wish I don't love you so
Cos I just can't go on
So please don't do me wrong
No I won't do you harm
My love for you goes on and on
There's no one else I want beside here
Give me your coldest shoulder to cry upon
You're never anywhere I find you
You're never anything I rely upon
And then I wish you would leave me
And then I wish you would go
And then I wish you didn't need me
And then I wish I didn't know
But I just can't go on
So please don't do me wrong
No I won't do you harm
My love for you goes on and on
No I just can't go on
So please don't do me wrong
No I won't do you harm
My love goes on and on...
More often than you know
Cos you're the love that I've clung to
More often than I've let it show
And then I wish you would leave me
And then I wish you would go
And then I wish you didn't need me
And I wish I don't love you so
So please don't do me wrong
No I won't do you harm
My love for you goes on and on
Give me your coldest shoulder to cry upon
You're never anywhere I find you
You're never anything I rely upon
And then I wish you would leave me
And then I wish you would go
And then I wish you didn't need me
And then I wish I didn't know
So please don't do me wrong
No I won't do you harm
My love for you goes on and on
No I just can't go on
So please don't do me wrong
No I won't do you harm
My love goes on and on...

This song kind of captures the helpless feeling you get when you're in love with someone who may not be in love with you...you're entirely in their hands.
Great song. Think it's on the Mission Impossible soundtrack.
Agree with drucifer23. In what would typically be a serene, cutesy little song, Crispin Hunt nearly YELLS how much he needs this chick.
Apparently the song is about Heroin, but obviously lends itself to unrequited love.
But the heroin theory lends a new perspective on the lyrics.
I've always liked this song a lot, even before it meant something to me. One of my favorites.
Great song. I love all the heart and soul the singer puts into it. So much emotion there!
Love the emotion. Really sweet song
The 'wish you would leave me' etc. always implies to me a self-loathing, or a suicidal painedness where there's this one good thing left; dazzlingly good but the rest is awful. 'you' leaving 'me' would remove the justification, which could be easier. And I'm agreeing about his voice: things like "I just can't go on" are not good lyrics without his yell.
Song describes a relationship where singer loves the girl, although the relationship is not good for him for whatever reason (who knows - she lies? cheats? is a junkie? etc.)... Yet the singer is too in love to let her go despite any of the reasons he should.. he knows it would be best, but doesn't have the strength to do it himself, hence the 'wish you would leave me.' Great tune.
@Jecausta nope it’s about heroine, your theory is close just replace the girl you imagined with drug addiction and your good easy to understand why people think this due to the music video which obviously was filmed to sell records and not promote drugs and the way it’s been used if popular culture. It’s another ‘Everything I own’ by Bread a much loved ballad about what a man will sacrifice to see the love of his life again, considered one of the greatest love songs of all time. But… it’s not a love song it’s actually about how...

But… it’s not a love song it’s actually about how much the artist loved his Father who had passed away and what he would do to see him again.
The song is about a girl that is a friend. She thinks that they are just good friends, but he loves her. She needs him at times, but she doesn't meet his need to be loved by her. Thats his pain, unreciprocated love. She may not even be aware of his love or pain. BTDT...
To me this song is about a bloke who's lass is cheating, he is torn between duty (her needing him) and his love for her and her cheating.
He's asking her to stop cheating; 'please don't do me harm' and 'there's no one else I want beside you'.
He wishes she'd leave him or that he didn't know about the cheating.
Shan love.
@kencol I see why you think that but the songs actually about drug addiction
