A Chain of Flowers Lyrics
Please wake up
It's so dark and cold
Please wake up
I feel so alone
And I feel so scared
That you're going away
And I feel so scared
All I want is summer
Stories from before
Just like the time you tried to hide
Behind the churchyard wall
And fell asleep before I came
And found you in a chain of flowers
Sleeping like a marble girl
Sleeping in a marble world
I'll never tell you
All the different ways
All the different ways
You make me so afraid
It's so dark and cold
Please wake up
I feel so alone
That you're going away
And I feel so scared
Stories from before
Just like the time you tried to hide
Behind the churchyard wall
And fell asleep before I came
And found you in a chain of flowers
Sleeping in a marble world
All the different ways
All the different ways
You make me so afraid

This song is so unbelievably beautiful. I think it's about the girl being suicidal. "I'll never tell you of all the different ways you make me so afraid..." I mean how amazing is that?
I'm not exactly sure about the song meaning, but check out the "Join the Dots" boxed set. Here's what Robert says about it, "Towards the end at Miraval, I was getting a bit stuck for lyrics, trying to finish 23 songs in a month, so I said to the others 'Please give me some words.' Simon slipped some under my door, and they included the line 'All I want is summer.' That was the catalyst for me to write A Chain of Flowers. It's essentially a song about the awful fear of losing someone you love."
I cry almost everytime I hear this song... WOW.
I always thought the chain of flowers in the title was like the myth of a fairy ring, where his lover is asleep in it, she is prone to magic that can bring her to a different world.
Now it's later, and he's remembering that time when he first realised how afraid he was of losing her, and it just hits him harder.
This song feels like it's from another world.
The first verse of this makes me imagine an elderly couple, and the wife wakes up one morning to find that her husband has died during the night. She desperately tries to wake him up, panicking about being left on her own and remembering all the happy times together. Makes you cry.
the lyrics are just so touching. so is she suicidal, or has she commited suicide? how do you protect someone who is falling away from everything? sigh so many of the cure's songs seem to be written for my life. this, in particular, fits my best friend.
no i dont think its about suicide at all... i just think its about how hes so afraid to lose her, in general.
dosn't this have to do with a story another member of the band gave Robert for lyrical help? I can't remember exactly... I havn't read up on my Cure for awhile...
beautiful song anyways
ONE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL SONGS IN THE WORLD.
God, this is just beautiful. "It's essentially a song about the awful fear of losing someone you love." So well written.
