Why Can't I Be You?

this is a simple beautiful. one of the cute cure songs..i can't believe no one has commented on it yet.

This was at least the inspiration for the song. Robert Smith: A fan said to me, "I wish I could be you." In the song I turned that around.

No-one has mentioned "I'll kiss you from your feet to where your head begins"... this song isn't about love, its about lust. He doesn't care about her face ie her personality, or what she is. He just cares about her body. "Make me hungry again" alludes to this lust.

"Why cant I be you?" He is not as desirable as she is...seems to think he is inadequete, and has to "run around in circles" to get her attention. He wants to be her so that she will lust after him as much and he can have her

Robert has given several explanaitions of this song...all different:

"Me bemoaning my inelegance? Or being jealous of someone else's poise?"

and

"The song came from a question asked by a fan. Even if I understood the sense of his question, I tried to explain to him that it was impossible. There are so many reasons why you can't be someone else. I personally think that we all have more or less the same life : we're born, we live and die. This idea of being someone else can create a terrible feeling of alienation."

and

"In summer 1985 I took a short trip to Lima, Peru for my first (and so far only) visit with Aurora, my adopted/sponsored child - 'Why Can't I Be You' was written on the last evening of my visit, as a sort of 'keepsake'..."

It's about POLAR BEARS! Robert has a fascination with POLAR BEARS.

To me this song is either about someone who has an infatuation with someone else eg- thier girlfriend/boyfriend, or it is a mockery of someone who is infatuated with themselves and who thinks that everyone else wants to be just like them (like what beehaus said). The lines "everything you do is simply delicate, everything you do is quite angelicate- why can't I be you?" just seem to have and insincere/mocking feeling to them when Robert sings them. Maybe it's just me adding that though!
