Catch Lyrics

Yeah I know who you remind me of
A girl I think I used to know
Yeah I'd see her when the days got colder
On those days when it felt like snow

You know I even think that she stared like you
She used to just stand there and stare
And roll her eyes right up to heaven
And make like I just wasn't there

And she used to fall down a lot
That girl was always falling
Again and again
And I used to sometimes try to catch her
But never even caught her name

And sometimes we would spend the night
Just rolling about on the floor
And I remember even though it felt soft at the time
I always used to wake up sore...

You know I even think that she smiled like you
She used to just stand there and smile
And her eyes would go all sort of far away
And stay like that for quite a while

And I remember she used to fall down a lot
That girl was always falling
Again and again
And I used to sometimes try to catch her
But never even caught her name

Yeah I sometimes even tried to catch her
But never even caught her name

This is what Smith says about Catch:

""In 1970, aged 10, I fell off my bike and suffered quite severe concussion; sporadically, over the following 2 years, I suffered fleeting but intense daytime hallucinations of a girl I called 'Bunny'. In 1972 I flew for the first time; a few minutes after take-off the plane hit really bad turbulence and I suffered a very violent attack of nausea and vomiting, along with an incredibly severe headache; after this event my 'Bunny' visits stopped... In 1984 in nyc jfk airport whilst waiting to pass through immigration I met a girl who was the spitting image of 'Bunny'; her 'real' name was Anna; we talked very briefly... "Catch" is about this chance encounter..."

I love The Cure, but this is not one their better songs - IMO

@monster36604 Are you mad?! Catch is possibly my favourite Cure song ... It's just perfect.

Sorry, explodinggirl, the lyrics are right - 'And I sometimes even tried to catch her - but never even caught her name' - which the whole point of calling the song 'Catch' don't you think?

my favorite thing about this song is the sexual reference...since he "never even caught her name."

this song's so terribly sad. the lyrics make it. seems like they kept the song so mellow for good reason.

I agree with xod. I always felt this was an endearing song about a girl with a seizure disorder. I'm suprised more people haven't interpretted it this way. It's a really poetic description of what are probably either abscence seizrues or partial complex seizures.

@heartbeats_xxx idk if that's what it's actually about, but I got that impression too. Might be because I've been listening to so much joy division lately. Either way, beautiful song

I think this song isn't actually about comparing a past love to a current love, i think it is all about one person, "you" and "the girl" are the same person. i think it is a love song, possibly about fond memories from his relationship with this person. it is just too specific to be about two people.

I agree with this until the tone of her falling down again and again. That to me sounds almost condescending, like she has been a fool all of this time from the girl she used to be to the woman she is now. Always falling for him again and again, and he tried to catch her, but in the end he doesn't really love her, and never even really caught her name. Unrequited love pity, with a dash of cruelty, that she was not even worthy of remembering her name.

@sage.charcoal I agree the two women in the song are actually one and the same. To me it's a reference to meeting someone who used to attend the same parties as you. Both of you would be so drunk and drugged up that you wouldn't really know what happened between you and names didn't really matter. Now, he is meeting the same woman again in later life.
