A Few Hours After This... Lyrics

The look before I go is the look for you
You only have to look and it will all come true
And we can fall outside
Into the fizzy nights

Or pull me down in here, you know it's all the same
I only want to see if you are happy again
Or we can roll around
And find out upside down, oh

A few hours after this and we're apart again
Like two white checks, like opposite poles
In a secret game
Like nothing like these I suppose

I really should have known by the cut of your smile
That the answer would be simple
It still took you a while to get it out of me
I thought you'd do it easily

Just put your hands around my heart and squeeze me 'til I'm dry
I never thought you'd ever start to ever ask me why
Just put your hands around my heart and squeeze me 'til I'm dry
I never thought you'd ever start to ever ask me why

I never saw you again
I never saw you again
I never saw you again
I never saw you again

To me, this song means something different than what Smith intended. Everytime I hear it, I for some reason, I think of a girl I met in Maryland. She was fun and we had a moment in time , a secret game, that was all ours. We went our own seperate paths after our relastionship ended. like opposite poles. but I've always wondered, years later, hours after this,......... if she was happy again.

whether I made a positive impact or not on her life. I may never know because

I never saw her again.

@Fear Nature beautiful interpretation. I had a similar sense.

Even when The Cure think they have screwed up and a song doesn't sound the way they intended, it is still a masterpiece. Genius!

great, great song.

it really captures that whole "eye contact with a hot girl at a bar" thing that made being single so much fun.

"fizzy night" good stuff, bobby smith.

@makersandwater Not being single: being young.

(And speaking of being "single:" a polyamorous lifestyle doesn't necessary mean you get laid a lot. Especially as you get older.)

So Smith would have been late 20s when he wrote this ... it seems to tell the story of meeting up with an old flame that rekindles in a moment of insanity.

The relationship ended suddenly - perhaps there were problems building up, but she was unhappy. And he felt for her, more than he imagined he did at the time.

So when she get around to asking why he never saw her again, she realizes that the reason is a bad one, perhaps simplistic, but unflattering nonetheless.

And with that, they are apart again. This time for good.

I love this tune ... first heard it on a bootleg tape and fell in love with the odd orchestral arrangement. It adds a finality to the overall mood of the song, although it's hard to mix in with other Cure songs when making a compilation.

It's odd that I'm looking at this song now, so many years after I first heard it. There is a girl that I had a relationship with that ended badly, suddenly even. I saw her again one time and then never again. I don't think I'm merely projecting my feeling about that situation on this song, though, it really fits.

@Chemical Reaction "Smith would have been late 20s when he wrote this"

He's actually even older than me, but he still manages to make me feel old because he's so energetic & creative even though he's depressed so much of the time. (Although his hair hasn't been the same since he chopped it all off before the Cure in Orange tour. <g>)

I got my info from the "Join the Dots" boxed set. Smith regards this one as "a slightly deranged experiment, an attempt to do something orchestral and quirky that didn't quite come together...it ended up as either this or Six Different Ways for The Head on The Door album, and Six Different Ways worked out better."

I love the bizarre school-marching-band sound.

The studio demo of this song found on the remastered 'The Head On The Door' has way different lyrics than this... anyone have a copy?

I found it online here: http://www.impressionofsounds.com/old/lyrics/fewhours.htm

I think who ever wrote it got it right, but it's hard to hear...

The outtake from The Head On The Door is better in my opinion, I don't know what the hell he's saying though, it sounds like he used some of the lyrics for "Screw."
