The Upstairs Room Lyrics

I love it all
These games we play
I close my eyes
You run away
I'm sure I asked you to stay
But now you're gone

And so I feel the grey
Pulse in my head
I turn off the lights and crawl into bed
I try to think of sunshine
But my body goes wet
With the first crash of thunder...

I don't think I can know
Anyone but you dear
That's for sure!

When it gets to four
It's my turn to go
Oh the kiss!
So alcoholic and slow
Arranging me for Saturday
I thought you would know
That I always sleep alone...

I don't think I can know
Anyone but you
Dear
That's for sure!

The upstairs room is cool and bright
We can go up there in summer
And dance all night...

Your sister started talking at a minute after ten
So everyone jumped up
And then fell over again
In April you can join them
And stare at me
At the ghost from your past...

My meaning of this song -

I love it All these games we play I close my eyes, you run away \ In this sentence I think he means like they play "hide and sick" or something, but then there's this sentence- I'm sure I asked you to stay But now you're gone \ which means that she left her. and it makes you think about the last sentence, and maybe it means that he try to look after her so she won't leave him, but then when he colse his eyes for one second, she run away - leave him.

Today I feel a gray pulse in my head \ he was an optimistic person, but now after she left him, he's starting to be pessimistic. I turn off the lights and crawl into bed \ he hides in his bed in the dark. I try to think of sunshine \ he tries to think about happy things But my body goes wet with the first crash of thunder \ but he just can't be happy withought her. I think that the thunder is like the sky is crashing, and the rain startes (and when it rains it like the sky's crying) and so his body is wet because it makes him cry too.

And I don't think I can know anyone but you \ when he says "know" I think he means that he can't be with someone else. He can't kiss or touch someone else. That's for sure!

When it gets to four It's my turn to go \ Maybe he thinks that he can get over her, and he says "It's my turn to go" as if he now can be with other women, and it's his turn to be with someone else. Oh, the kiss! \ he kisses this new woman So alcoholic and slow \ this sentence can be two things. one, this kiss was actually pretty good... two, maybe the kiss was alcoholic because he was drunk when they kissed, because when he's sober he always thinking about the woman he loves and he can't really be with other woman. Arranging me for Saturday \ the new girl want's to date him on the weekend. I thought you would know That I always sleep alone \ he turns her down. Maybe she wanted to sleep at his house, and maybe have sex, but he tells her that he can't.

I don't think I can love \ here he says LOVE. Now after he tried to be with other girls he know that he really loves her. anyone but you, dear \ he wants only her. and here he calls her "dear". That's for sure!

The upstairs room is cool and bright \ the upstairs room can be the place above. like a place that is near to heaven or something. or maybe they have memoris from this upstairs room. We can go up there in summer and dance all night \ he offers her to be with him. But not actually be - kiss and have sex and all that, just hang out with him. just dance.

eventually she don't want him back, and he's just the ghost from her past. But still, he loves her, and can't be with anyone else but here.

It's a sad song. I love it.

he's lost his love...he tries to deal with it and cheer up a little, but he just cannot. he's saddened by the thoughts of their memories...he really misses her...he sleeps alone and he knows she really was the only one for him yet he tries to think of "sunshine" but turns to alcohol instead... I love the lyric "The upstairs room is cool and bright We can go up there in summer And dance all night... " Perhaps he is thinking of happy memories...he really loves her.

This reminds me of the room upstairs in the novel 1984 that Winston and his lady friend would rent out in secret.

i think this song is either about he likes someone but he can't get them to feel the same way about him as he does for her...

or he lost a love. he's trying to make himself happier by thinking of happy memories.

According to Smith:

"Written whilst I was sleeping on the floor in Steve Severin's flat...not so true stories..."

fun song

this song is about a girl and boy drinking and having fun in the attic of a house (KA MT wants you to get in touch st old number)

My Interpretation

It's about falling love with a prostitute. They have playful alcohol driven sex in the upstairs room... He is falling in love with her and longs for more but also enjoys the arrangement at the sametime. His conflict is that he feels like he truly knows her and the love is real but she only sees him as a client. He longs to have her feel what he is feeling but it is unrequited love.

Interesting bit of trivia: The Upstairs Room is also the title of a Dutch Holocaust survivor's autobiography from I think the late '60s or early '70s (definitely well before this song came out, anyhow). During the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands, the girl (who was I think preteen or so, maybe even a little younger, at the start of the story) and her family were hidden by a family of gentiles in a small room in the top floor of their house, hence the title. Because she was a young girl when she went into hiding, people (including critics) tend to compare the author and her chronicle of her experience to Anne Frank and hers. I haven't read The Upstairs Room, but my impression is that because it was written by a survivor, years after the Holocaust, so that she can't help but write from an historical perspective, while The Diary of a Young Girl was written in the midst of the terrifying historical events by a girl who did not know that she was destined to achieve worldwide fame for what was meant to be a personal journal and not a report to give others an idea of what it was like — nor that her fame would be posthumous (perhaps for the best, since it was after — it's really not possible to say that one or the other is "better:" they're just very different.

In any case...I don't know if the song has any relationship to this book or if it's just coincidence, but I thought it would be interesting to mention it, and who knows? Maybe somebody will find some possible relationship between the two Upstairs Rooms (song and book, that is).

(For the record: I have no clue what this song is about, except it seems to have something to do with a sexual relationship of some kind or other, but that may well be a metaphor,)
