Just One Kiss Lyrics
Remember the time that you reigned all night?
The queen of Siam in my arms
Remember the time that the islands sank?
But nobody opened their eyes
Remember that time that the trees fell down?
The wood crashing through the wall
Remember the sound that could wake the dead?
But nobody woke up at all
Somebody died for this
Somebody died for just one kiss
Just one kiss
Remember the time that the sky went black?
We waited alone on the sands
Remember the taste of the raging sea?
But nobody held out their hands
Somebody died for this
Somebody died for just one kiss
Just one kiss, just one kiss, just one kiss
The queen of Siam in my arms
Remember the time that the islands sank?
But nobody opened their eyes
The wood crashing through the wall
Remember the sound that could wake the dead?
But nobody woke up at all
Somebody died for just one kiss
Just one kiss
We waited alone on the sands
Remember the taste of the raging sea?
But nobody held out their hands
Somebody died for just one kiss
Just one kiss, just one kiss, just one kiss

Is it really 'rained all night' or ought it be 'reigned' since it's referring to reigning Queen of Siam??
first, i think all ? should be ! ;) so,i think the song is a tribute (and kind of love song) to lydia lunch. her first album is named 'queen of siam'. for the reminder of their england leg of the picture tour they had her as support act. according to the book 'never enough' she seemed to have an exhausting act but it left most of the audience unimpressed. so did the cure's performances. so i think all those lines like "the sound that could wake the dead but nobody woke up at all" refers to that. but smith was impressed by her. so that 'somebody' is actually him...
@glOOmyART Yes I was just going to write about Lydia Lunch and her album Queen of Siam along with her and Robert's relationship. I think you hit the song meaning on the head.

I registered with this site just to comment on this song.
Yes, the extended version is the better of them, but it originally appeared on the Let's Go To Bed 12" single. I have a bootleg called "Play For Radio" that has a radio broadcast studio recorded version of the song from 1989... it is really good!
This song is about two lovers standing on the beach at the very moment in which the world is destroyed... and they are having a kiss. Maybe the kiss caused the destruction? Unknown. But the kiss was so important that it occurred at the time when the world was ending. Also, it might be said that the "other people" not included in the kiss might have had a serious lack of appreciation for the end of the world, or possibly for love itself, since they ignored everything and slept through most of it.
If you break down the song, here is what it says:
"Remember the time that you reigned all night, the Queen of Siam in my arms" - there isnt actually a "Queen of Siam" (Thailand). When Japanese Whispers was being worked on, Robert and Lol spent a lot of time traveling about in Asia. He most likely used a visit to Thailand and a woman he met there (or maybe his wife Mary visited?) as a reason for the words. He refers to the woman as a queen, which denotes her control over him (and his heart). She has some sort of power over him. The original version of this song (available on the bootleg I mentioned) has more references to Siam (both "king" and "queen"), so maybe he saw himself and this girl as king and queen while he was in Thailand?
The rest is a straightforward explanation of the events...
The islands sank, trees fell down, loud sounds occurred, the sky went black, and then the oceans rushed into the shore. As all of this was happening, the two lovers shared a kiss, while everyone else in the world slept through the event, or completely ignored it all together.
"Somebody died for just one kiss" - that one kiss, in which time stops and the world is destroyed... was worth it all.
what a lyrically dynamic song...the cure is famous for that though. this is probably one of my favorites, definetly not their most popular but one of my favorites..... im excited that im the first post....new experience
yes i looooove this song. but yes, this song to me reminds me of how i feel when im not taking advantage of the moment. i can think of so many times ive been with someone i cared for, and just had that sense of urgency. "I HAVE TO KISS YOU NOW! "
This song is my favourite cure song ever! I prefer the extended version on The Walk to the puny Japenese Whispers version. It just builds and builds to an inevitable release (like when you are trying to hold back crying only to break down without seeing it coming)
Yes, the version on The Walk is better. Not available anywhere on CD, as far as I know.
Excellent song! Robert says it's about stuff that happened to him one night. ???
I think it is about a secret
...an open secret. You see and hear nothing. But sung beautifully!

Oops... I meant 1986 and not 1989 for the date of the original studio version with alternate lyrics.
