Buttered Beauties Lyrics

the first time i saw you
i knew there would be no other
that tingle told me
we were meant for one another
i'm calling you
1-2-3
buttered beauties of the negroid north
spread your glossy tallow on me
oiled wonder of the midnight forest
toss down your web on me
she's got me by the tether
(sticking it out)
in simultated leather
(sticking it out)
i think she broke my tether
c'mon keep on comin' on now

i feel kind of sad that devo became so wrapped up in their "whip it" hit. they had such an outstanding sound. some of their rarer songs or old recordings simply mopped the floor with their newer stuff.

To d lacy, DEVO never got wrapped up in anything. They did their own thing. THey didn't overmarket Whip It, it recieved heavy rotation on an early MTV because of a simple lack of video's at the time.

I actually don't like this song, however. THe lyrics are cryptic, and the song itself just ain't there.

Around the time this song was written, Jerry was doing a lot of performance art with S&M-type props, possibly because he worked at a porno theater at the time. This song feels like a fragment from something like that - we have to remember that the Hardcore Devo albums are scrapbooks of songs and song ideas without as much context as a regular album.
