Stipe does unrequited love better than anyone. And his cry 4.18 in is enough to break your heart.
I would call this an obsession-song. The feeling of this song seems very similar to "You" off Monster.
Though R.E.M. do not write a huge amount of love songs, and Up has about two of them, this definitely seems about romantic desire. Not just a crush, he can't stop thinking about the person at all.
I can't believe nobody has commented on this song. Or barely on any of the songs off of this album.

I love this song... mostly because I dedicated it to a certain someone grin ... I wish he could see me like I see him...
Anyway, slightly strange interpretation but here goes: I was at a fair recently and I was comparing the feelings of going up in the air, losing control and that swimmy feeling in your tummy you get on rides to the feeling of being in love. (Probably only becaus eI was thinking about aforementioned person at the time!) Anyway, that's what this song means to me.
It's amazing that the tow best love songs ever written can be found on the same album (the other being At My Most Beautiful).
It took me a long time to work out this was a love song but when you get it it's so obvious, It's about a man who feel like a useless stumbling idiot next to his amazing girlfriend who he feels can achieve anything.
Its' about how he feels like a bumbling idiot next to her. And about how grateful he is to have her.
This song is absolutely incredible.
To me, its about a man who is completely enamored, utterly intoxicated by a woman who he believes is above him. Somehow, she wants him anyway so he gives in, wants to 'let the stars know they've won'. Most of the song just expresses his complete captivation with her, to the point that she is the air he is breathing, he needs her more than anything. The emotion is intense, enough to give you shivers just listening to it. Its amazing.

Maybe it's because of my personal experience, but to me this song is about trying to forget someone you're deeply in love with after a failed relationship. But you find that it's extremely difficult to forget, after being so close. Everything reminds you of that person, he/she had become a vital element in your life and you get that feeling that he/she is in the air you're breathing. You meet this person again and they find that you're upside down because you're not able to get over that person. If you got hurt, you might hold a grudge, but all it takes is a smile to get lost again.
