The Song That Jane Likes Lyrics

And in plays to write the wire in
I'll come back again
Torching time talking rhymes in
I'll come back again

Would you like to play
With the thought of a friend
In a distant passing stage
While you lie around
With your hands up and out
So resigned you will fall down

While you around here play
Wild on the warm and far away
While you around here play
The days keep scribbling themselves in tidy lines

Would you like to play
With a fool holding hands
With a one-eyed jack of spades
While on the deck they sing
All of the captain's cards are kings
Still he and the queen are lost at sea
I hope it isn't you or me

And I'll be back 'round again
Yes I'll walk in time with you old friend
And we'll find that place
That we had danced in so long ago
And in plays to write the wire in
I'll come back again
Torching time talking rhymes in
I'll come back again
With this resigned the letter I sign

This is certinly a toughy. My friends and i debate this all the time. I read somewhere that it had to do with the brief time in Dave's life where he tried his hand at acting. Which would make sence for the whole "And in plays to write the wire in I'll come back again" Possibly suggesting he will one day return to acting. (doubtful, imho) And as a side not my brother now refers to it as "The Song That Lissy Likes" becasue it's constantly on in my car. (:

Jane isn't the only one.

This song is actually abouyt dave's younger sister jane matthews, who dave considers to be his soul mate. Some of the lyrics such as "plays to write the wire in" have to do with his days as an actor. Wires were used in plays for a number of reasons. Jane used to ask dave to play the song, or at least the chords to it since it had no lyrics because she liked it. Most of the other lyrics are cryptic and shared only among him and jane.

the line, "the days keep scribbling themselves in tidy lines" ranks as my favorite, along with "turns out not where but who you're with that really matters." awesome

Where are you Jane? Still flying the friendly skies? Swamp crashes got you down? Still hittin' the pipe in the dormroom darkness? Still alone everywhere you go? Explicating poems with devilish wit? Loved the time we had. I wish it could have lasted. Butts in the bushes-wonder if you ever cleaned them up?

Sorry, got wrapped up in memories. Funny how a song can bring back vivid pictures of by-gone days. Peace

Dave was told by his sister that this was a very good song...hence the name. It was also the first written song, but "i'll back u up" was the first song that had music to go with the lyrics.

Its definetely about Dave's returm to the stage...."I'll come back again". Before DMB, he was pretty popular in a theatre group.

Dave has publicly admitted that this song is really about nothing.
As far as the title goes, he named it this because his sister always begged him to play it, it never had a title but since she begged so much, he named it "the song that Jane likes" not because she said it was a good song, she just always wanted him to play it.

Also this is the first song dave ever came up with. It's been long debated that "I'll back you up" was the first song ever written...but in actuallity Dave had the music for this song, but didnt have the lyrics...he then wrote and composed "I'll back you up" then came back and wrote lyrics for "TSTJL". "I'll back you up" gets the credit as the first song ever written simply because it was the first song fully completed.

Maybe this song has no meaning, but it makes me think of my friends and the time spent and all the good memories

this song isnt about jane matthews. dave named this song because jane liked it and was always asking him to play it for her. when he couldnt find a better name ha called it THE SONG THAT JANE LIKES because thats what he always refered to it as. this song may be a little about acting, in fact i think it is, but i heard that this song a little to no meaning. i think dave was just fooling around with some music and got a good song out of it. its really good though- cant deny that.
