Standing by yourself
High on the hills above the ocean
This is where you'd come
To walk with your friends
Strange how it leaves you
With no emotion
[Chorus]
You can't fight the undertow
Not when you're all alone
You can't fight the undertow
How long til you let go
Taking one step back
Trying to pull yourself together
No matter what you say
Nothing you do
Can hold back the forces on you forever
[Chorus: x2]
High on the hills above the ocean
This is where you'd come
To walk with your friends
Strange how it leaves you
With no emotion
You can't fight the undertow
Not when you're all alone
You can't fight the undertow
How long til you let go
Trying to pull yourself together
No matter what you say
Nothing you do
Can hold back the forces on you forever

I think this song is about giving into depression, being submissive in terms of thinking things can change. She's with all her friends but she's alone at the same time and feels empty, numb because she's felt so much for so long. Now she feels nothing and she's drifting with the undertow because the pulling force of the depression on her is inevitable. It's insuperable. Quite a depressing song but still very good.
Yup, previous comment's about summed this song up.
At a push this might be my favourite Ivy song. Flows really well.
I think it's about emotions in general. It tells us that the undertow (emotions) always drags us along with it, allowing us to make decisions that we later on end up regretting. So you end up trying to make yourself emotionless, but it's simply impossible.
