I've never read anywhere where Mascis or any of the band has said that this is only about the music scene. The only bits like that I've read are by music journos who don't know any more than us. There seems to be so many references to a relationship in it that I think that's in there are as well.
My take is that it's about a girl within a group of friends (the freak scene) that is really in to him and who he gets together now and again. He likes her but he knows her really well so the idea of them getting together permanently seems weird. It obvious to everyone that something is going on and that they should get together and they keep pestering them about it. He needs them all to leave them alone if it's going to work.

I've always thought this song was about Lou Barlow and J Mascis's relationship and all the inner angst in the band at the time.

i think this song's about two people who are the bestest friends, but they're so close they cant be together because it'll ruin their freindship. i guess thats ironic cause whatever happens, 'when i need a friend its still you'. maybe anyway

i love this song and i saw dinosaur jr. in knoxville and the show kicked ass it was loud and in your face. i suggest since they are on tour you all should go see them expect for stickboy20 you should go shot yourself in the head.
Rupert said it best. It's been said about a million times before. The song is about the indie scene and Dinosaur Jr frustration with said scene. At the end he admits he still needs those in the scene for support

I always figured this song was about how dysfunctional the band was. I read that book "Our Band Could Be Your Life" and I'm pretty sure they did want to kill each other at certain points.
