I had no idea how much I need her
In peaceful times I hold her close and I feed her
My heart starts palpitating
When I think my guess was wrong
But I think I'll get alone
She's just a girl
She's a bomb
Athena
All I ever want to do is please her
My life has been so settled
And she's the reason
Just one word from her
And my troubles are long gone
But I think I'll get along
She's just a girl
She's a bomb
She's a bomb
Just a girl, just a girl
Just a girl, just a girl
Just a girl, just a girl
She's just a girl
Athena
My heart felt like a shattered glass in an acid bath
I felt like one of those flattened ants
You find on a crazy path
I'd have topped myself to give her time
She didn't need to ask
Was I a suicidal psychopath
She's just a girl
She's a bomb
She's just a girl
She's a bomb
Consumed
There was a beautiful white horse
I saw on a dream stage
He had a snake the size of a sewer pipe
Livin' in his rib cage
I felt like a pickled priest
Who was being flambed
You've got me requisitioned blondie
She's just a girl
She's a bomb
I'm happy
She's a bomb
I'm ecstatic
Just a girl, just a girl
Just a girl, just a girl
Just a girl, just a girl
Just a girl
Look into the face of a child
Measure how long you smiled
Before the mem'ry claimed
How long would children remain
How long could children remain
Athena
You picked me up by my lapels
And screamed "leave her"
I felt like waking up in heaven
On an empty meter
And now you're stuck
With a castrated leader
And I hate the creep
I didn't mean that
She's a bomb
I just said it
She's a bomb
Please She's a bomb
Athena
I had no idea how much I need her
My life has been so settled
And she's the reason
Just one word from her
And my troubles are long gone
Ooh but I get along
She's just a girl
She's a bomb
She's just a girl
She's a bomb
In peaceful times I hold her close and I feed her

When I think my guess was wrong

I seriously thought the line "She's just a girl, she's a bomb" was "She's just a girl, she's a boy." lol this sure clears it up.
I have loved this song since the 80's! I've rediscovered it since adding it to my iPod, but when I hear this song, to me it sounds like falling in love and all the insecurities, passion, frustration, and happiness that go along with it. It makes no sense, just like love, which will drive you crazy in good and bad ways. Athena goes from being a bomb, to just a girl, to a creep, all in the course of the song, and that is love! I never knew what the lyrics were in the 80's, not all of them anyway, but having read them online, and now the story behind it, I'm so glad it meant what I thought it did! It's the epitome of that crazy little thing called love!
I get the whole love story with someone you can't be with. It's beautifully poetic as much of Townshend s writing is. I NEED to know who is the castrated leader that he hates? Reagan, Thatcher, and Gorbachev are the 3 I think of at that time? I'd really love to know as this was a song I heard everyday of my teen years.
I've always licked this song - it moves like a quick dream with a lot of symbolism -not sure what it means but feels like a good dream to me.
you've licked the song? how does it taste?
I heard that Pete Townshend wrote this song about a woman names theresa, who was married to a friend of his at the time. He had done some nose candy and just flat out fell in love with her.
He later changed the name to athena, and that's the song.
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHDOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAHHHHHHHHHHgjflbdlkbnfdlkfnlksj YEAH YEAH YEAH
I can't believe that only 4 people commented on this song. I really want to know what it means, but I have no idea. It's a good song to turn up while you're drivin' down the highway.
Here is what I take from this song, especially being named Athena myself... He's in love with a woman he never knew existed. A woman he can hold safely close to him and trust and love.. When he questions himself and his what he is feeling, he reassures himself that he'll be fine and get along because, rationally, she's just a girl.. but to him she's a bomb, she blows him away inside in every way. He wants to love her.. He loves her from a far... She makes him feel peaceful in the tumultuous world in which he lives. But again,...

But again, he tells himself she can't be real, he'll be fine and get alone, she's just a girl. Without her his heart aches. He's flattened inside and needs to love her, she would never even have to ask. The dream of a white horse and a snake livin' in his ribcage, to me, is evil itself in disguise and he sees it...how it is hurting her. He feels helpless, a priest who's unable to save her, show her the evil..but still he's happy how she makes him feel.. The face of the child is Athena. He wonders how long her innocence of the child she is will remain with the lurking evil around her. She loves him..but because he loves her from a far he's with another. He so much can't believe she loves him it's like waking up in heaven on an empty meter because she's stuck and blinded by the evil before her...and he hates the creep for it. But she's a bomb in every way to him. Just a girl...but a bomb...
Apparently, this is about Pete Townshend falling in love with actress Theresa Russell at a party or something. The next day, when he told her about it, she rejected him. This song is about...precisely that!
Anyway, this seems one of the more poppy songs by the Who - perhaps even bearing a passing resemblance to their older stuff, like "Legal Matter". Still, I played this to death 2 years ago, so I guess I'm more cynical about it now. I'd take it over Eminence Front in any case.
Man. It's Hard really sucked.
Ms. Russell rejected Mr. Townshend because she was already in love with another man, the director Nicolas Roeg, whom Pete had wanted to helm his Lifehouse film. Despite knowing that she was committed to someone else, he thought his rock star status might allow him to steal her away. No such luck. No wonder the LH project fell apart yet again.

For me, this back story elevates the song from pop schmaltz into an ode to unrequited love.

"It's Hard", while no masterpiece, is an underrated record from a time when The Who was struggling for relevance. I'm a little biased, though as I saw them on this tour; The Clash, touring Combat Rock, opened for them. Nothing but good memories.
soldier of funk, i thought the exact same thing! this is a good song. not that well known, but was a Top 30 hit back in 1982 for The Who.
I love this song. It's catchy. Of course, not their best work or anything, but I LOVE this song. And thankfully, it only has like, four or five guitar chords, which helps to make it halfway playable because I suck at guitar. I had no idea which album it was on until now.. I can't speak for the rest of the album, but I do like this song. Besides. I tend to like the taboo albums by groups anyway. xD
