Wrecking Yard Lyrics

GATHER ROUND TO HEAR THIS TALE
A STORY WHICH HAS GROWN OLD
TORN OF THEIR PRIDE
STARS CRASH AND COLLIDE
THE WRECKING YARD GROWS COLD
THEY MAY LAUGH AND THEY MAY SAY
THIS DOESN'T HURT THEM OH NO
IF YOU HAPPEN TO SEE THEM JUST LISTEN
TAKE AWAY SOME OF THEIR PAIN TONIGHT

THESE ARE SADDENED TIMES TODAY
THIS SICKENED PLACE WE LIVE
WE WALK RIGHT THROUGH
THE WRECKING YARD
IT'S NOTHING THAT WE GIVE

MEMORIES OF DAYS GONE BY
EYES WET WITH PICTURES SO BRIGHT
WARM FROM THE FIRE
THE CHILDREN THEY TIRE
THEY'RE BURNING OUT TONIGHT
DANCING IN THE NIGHT THEY'RE SHINING
UP ABOVE THE SKY
LAUGHING IN THEIR DARKEST TIMES
YOU'LL SEE THEM ASLEEP IN THE RAIN TONIGHT

THESE ARE SADDENED TIMES TODAY
THIS SICKENED PLACE WE LIVE
WE WALK RIGHT THROUGH
THE WRECKING YARD
IT'S NOTHING THAT WE GIVE

GATHER ROUND TO HEAR THIS TALE
A STORY WHICH HAS GROWN OLD

I guess this could be about a poor place. A place where people hang out. It is not the most beautiful place but it is home.

the wrecking yard could be a metaphor to a "place" inside a person's head where their bad memories are stored and must be wrecked and gotten rid of, forgotten. the person "walks through the wrecking yard"...aka strolls through memory lane and cannot let go of the horrible memories and is therefore depressed, living in their bad past. and they talk about it all the time (gather round to hear this tale, a story which has grown old)

I'm going to analyze this from a historical stand-point. I was thinking that this song could actually be about the halocaust. The Jews were stripped of everything. When discovered by Nazi police, they were to be imprisoned. "The Wrecking Yard" is life after being discovered. And the last four lines of the second verse is about all those that went to the gas chambers. People in that time believed that the only way to escape was death, so that's why they're dancing up above the sky, and the last of those four lines, "You'll see them asleep in the rain tonight" is supposed to represent the bodies after they've died and the fear that people have that they'll be next.

Maybe it's the first lines about stars crashing and colliding, but to me this song is about the 'use and throw away' method of Hollywood movie producers. Star gets to old, dump them. Get someone new, young, and fresh... send the old ones off to... the wrecking yard.
