What brings you around
Did you lose something
The last time you were here
You'll never find it now
It's buried deep
With your identity
So stand aside and let the next one pass
Don't let the door kick you in the ass
There's no return from 86
There's no return from 86
There's no return from 86
There's no return from 86
Don't even try
Exit out the back
And never show your head around again
Purchase your ticket
And quickly take the last train
Out of town
So stand aside and let the next one pass
Don't let the door kick you in the ass
There's no return from 86
There's no return from 86
There's no return from 86
There's no return from 86
Don't even try
There's no return from 86
There's no return from 86
There's no return from 86
There's no return from 86
Don't even try
Did you lose something

The songs is about when Green Day signed with Reprise Records and was not allowed to play at 924 Gilman St. because Gilman St. only allowed local bands signed to non-major record labels to play. Many of the local punk bands marked signing to major labels, "selling out", this is why it was banned. The term 86 comes from the year 924 Gilman St. opened, in 1986.
I think you're right about everything except the interpretation of the title... 86'd means gotten rid of.

I think this song is about GD selling out and signing with a big record company. The lyrics are from the point of view of their old fans.
To be 86'ed is to be kicked out of something. Hence...GD is longer welcome back in their old community.
I live in Berkeley CA where the 924 Gilman club is. (It sucks anyway, it's a bunch of 14 high school wannabe goth kids) Last time Green Day played there a huge group of people tried to beat them up and some one lit their drums on fire! Same thing happened pretty much when Jello Biafra from Dead Kennedys tried to come back. It's a crying shame if you ask me.
Does anyone else find the live version of this on Warning better than the studio recording?
when its over...its over. move on already.
When someone is banned from a club, they call it 86. Green Day were banned from a club, I forget the story, but they wrote this song about it.
i guess its about a club... i dont kno. hahaha thats my name. w/e. um, but i found out today that sometimes they mark your time card at work with an "86" if you're fired. but i guess it pretty much means the same thing in the song. like nerdypunkchick says: when its over...its over and just move on.
i thought this song was about they year 86, like maybe it was a bad time in his life and he needed to move on and forget about it. but the club thing seems more likely. ah well. feck it.
they were'nt banned from a club dumbass..... the club where they were first introduced to punk music disowned them after they became so called " sellouts"... they were'nt barred... but it said on the bathroom wall something like death to billy joe... i dunno.... i know they were'nt barred though... i think nerdypunkchick put it best
They pretty much got exiled from the Gilman ST club. They were called sellouts and on the wall the words "death to billie joe" were on it. in late 2001, the band played a set at Gilman for the first time in about 9-10 years using instruments from other bands. They played all old songs, and people liked it. So much for "there's no return from 86"
