Sappy (Early version) Lyrics

And if you say your prayers
You will make God happy
And if you do what's true
You will make me happy
I'll keep you in a jar
And you will seem happy
I'll give you breathing holes
You will think you're happy, now

You're in a laundry room
You're in a laundry room
You're in a laundry room

And if you save yourself
You will make him happy
He'll bring you fine rewards
Then you will feel happy
I'll keep you in my room
I'm sure you'll be happy
And if you save your soul
You will think you're happy, now

You're in a laundry room
You're in a laundry room
You're in a laundry room
You're in a laundry room

This song is so... ace. It's beautiful. I heard it some time ago and learnt to play it and had been singing along to it with different lyrics, I thought the chorus was either "you'r inaugural" or "you'r in our group"! I was wrong the whole God things changes the meaning somewhat.

I must admit I was surprised to discover it was about god. I though it was some kind of Polly derivitive where it's about someone trapped in an abusive realtion ship. The bit about being in a laundry room made no sense to me. Unless there's somthing in his diaries, we'll never really know, huh. What come's to my mind is connotations of being made clean or pure and the laudry is the metaphorical place where that happens.

Much like the world where we have a variety of experiences that shape and mold us and ulitmately mature/sanctify/give us recovery (for all you 12th steppers out there ;) and some of those experiences we like and some dislike. The verses seem to describe that world, which can be confusing. At times it can be like we're stuck in the wash of life, being beaten around mercilessly by powers greater than our selves and at others it's like being in the dryer... nice and warm.

Thanks for reading! :)

This is an amazing song, makes you think a lot, and question your faith like God intended us to do. Are we wasting our time pleasing God? Who knows, i love this song though, its really honest.

The song goes a little deeper than just what these guys have said. It is about how if God were real, he'd be a little kid watching all you people who put yourselves in the glass jars (pointless restraints) of religion. And how people trick themselves into beleiving they are happy and their hardships are acts of god to make them better people or test their faith in him. But look a the chorus

"You're in a laundry room You're in a laundry room "

In a later verison of this song, the line "Conclusion came to you" is added to those two lines. Bascially what its saying is, if God ever was really there, he certainly doesn't care about you anymore. You've been left aside to die in the laundry room, assuming you haven't been there all along. This has been my biggest concern with religion ever since i was 8 and i this song uses the perfect metaphor.

The bit about the Laundry Room.... isn't that just a reference to the fact that the song was recorded in a place called The Laundry Room? Or perhaps I dreamed it. Such a great song though.
