A horse in the country Lyrics
The money would be pretty good
if a quart of milk were still a dollar
or even if a quart of milk were still a quart
And the hours, well, I don't mind
how they creep on by like an old love of mine
it's the years that simply disappear that are doing me in
Guess I married too young,
yeah, nineteen was just too young,
but sometimes you meet someone
and your guts just burn
It's not that I don't love him anymore
it's just that when I hear him
coming through that front door
my heart doesn't race like it did once before
But I've got a horse out in the country
I get to see him every second Sunday
He comes when I call him,
yeah, he knows his name
One day I'll saddle up
and the two of us will ride away
This weather I could almost stand
if the sun would shine a little brighter
or even if the sun would shine at all
But lately it just seems to me
that this life has lost its mystery
and these cold fall mornings seem to bite
just a little bit harder
And all my friends have settled down
become their mothers and their fathers
without a sound
Except for Cathy,
she bought a one-way subway ticket
and left us all behind
But I've got a horse out in the country
I get to see him every second Sunday
He comes when I call him,
yeah, he knows his name
One day I'll saddle up
and the two of us will ride away
This town wouldn't be so bad
if a girl could trust her instincts
or even if a girl could trust a boy
if a quart of milk were still a dollar
or even if a quart of milk were still a quart
And the hours, well, I don't mind
how they creep on by like an old love of mine
it's the years that simply disappear that are doing me in
yeah, nineteen was just too young,
but sometimes you meet someone
and your guts just burn
It's not that I don't love him anymore
it's just that when I hear him
coming through that front door
my heart doesn't race like it did once before
I get to see him every second Sunday
He comes when I call him,

One day I'll saddle up
and the two of us will ride away
if the sun would shine a little brighter
or even if the sun would shine at all

She's not happy where she's at this stage of her life but she has a horse in the country to look forward to seeing every other weekend.
She dreams of saddling up & just leaving it all behind.

Like ruarchitect, I think the horse out in the country is her "other man". She admits she "married too young" and that her "heart doesn't race like it did once before" for her husband. BUT she's got a horse out in the country that she sees every second Sunday. "One day I'll saddle up/And the two of us will ride away" - pretty clear she's talking about leaving her husband, who she no longer loves, and running off with the one she does love.
Great song.
Isn't it a dark horse? Because the last sentence makes you doubt whether she is deciding to go for change. The familiar life is quite safe after all. Even if your bored with people or surrounded with liar and hypocrites?
these comments are so banal and short-sighted. clearly the "horse" may symbolize another man, but what about the multiple references to time passing (in such a way that it cannot be recovered)? what about cathy? what about the last line? which boy betrayed her? there is so so so much more going on here...
A slice of a life as Michael Timmins captures so beautifully and his sister conveys so well. Uncovering the poignancy and magic hidden in the mundane. Milk is too expensive, the sun doesn't shine, and in spite of her rationalisations she doesn't love her husband anymore. But every other weekend she gets to call her horse to her, and ride away, and dream about never turning back.
I think in this case the horse represents " the other man".
to alot of girls horses represent so much. freedom, beauty, power etc. but this song is different because not only because it combines all of these but also because horses become of symbol of a realistic dream.
