200 More Miles Lyrics
Atlanta's a distant memory
Montgomery a recent birth
And Tulsa burns on the desert floor
Like a signal fire
I got Willie on the radio
A dozen things on my mind
And number one is fleshing out
These dreams of mine
I've got 200 more miles of rain asphalt in line
Before I sleep
But there'll be no warm sheets or welcoming arms
To fall into tonight
In Nashville there is a lighter
In a case for all to see
It speaks of dreams and heartaches
Left unsung
And in the corner stands a guitar and
Lonesome words scrawled in a drunken hand
I don't travel past, travel hard before
And I'm beginning to understand
That I've got 200 more miles of rain asphalt in line
Before I sleep
But there'll be no warm sheets or welcoming arms
To fall into tonight
They say that I am crazy
My life wasting on this road
That time will find my dreams
Scared or dead and cold
But I heard there is a light
Drawing me to reach an end
And when I reach there, I'll turn back
And you and I can begin again
I've got 200 more miles of rain asphalt in line
Before I sleep
But there'll be no warm sheets or welcoming arms
To fall into tonight
I've got 200 more miles of rain asphalt in line
Before I sleep
But I wouldn't trade all your golden tomorrows
For one hour of this night
Atlanta's a distant memory
Montgomery a recent birth
And Tulsa burns on the desert floor
Like a signal fire
Montgomery a recent birth
And Tulsa burns on the desert floor
Like a signal fire
A dozen things on my mind
And number one is fleshing out

I think there are some misheard lines here (either on my part or on the transcriber's). Her voice is such a (beautiful) whisper on this tune, and there's such resonance in the room, that you really have to strain to hear the details.
"...Montgomery a recent blur"
"... 200 more miles of rain asphalt and lights"
"I'm travelling paths travelled hard before..."
"...My life wasted on this road"
"...my dreams \ Scattered dead and cold"
"But ahead there is a light..."
Montgomery is where Hank Williams is from and Nashville has a Hank museum which is the lighter and guitar that Michael Timmins writes about.
This song is about her Journey coming near to an end, such a lonely trip....and she sings of the sites she's seen.
What a great road song. Brings back lots of memories of driving across the great Western US in the middle of the night... "I got Willie on the radio and a dozen things on my mind...." feeling alone, the loved on not being there when the trip is over, wondering why one is taking this trip (My life wasting on this road) Do the cities represent past and future relationships?(Atlanta's a distant memory, Montgomery's a recent birth...)or different parts of her life? There is suggestion of hope - that the current relationship in question might be salavagable (When I reach there, I'll turn bck, and you and I can begin again). The line that baffles me to no end is "Tulsa burns on the desert floor like a signal fire..." Do these Canadians fail at US geography - Tulsa is not on a desert floor- I've wondered if they didn't mean Tuscon burning on the desert floor- looking down on it from the surounding mountains. Or is it a metaphor- another potential relationships that could lead to another heartbreak?

Certainly Atlanta, Montgomery and Tulsa were all important in the Civil Rights movement and Tulsa burned in 1920
Oops, 1921
