Wicked Little Town (Reprise) Lyrics
Forgive me,
For I did not know.
'Cause I was just a boy
And you were so much more
Than any god could ever plan,
More than a woman or a man.
And now I understand how much I took from you:
That, when everything starts breaking down,
You take the pieces off the ground
And show this wicked town
something beautiful and new.
You think that Luck
Has left you there.
But maybe there's nothing
up in the sky but air.
And there's no mystical design,
No cosmic lover preassigned.
There's nothing you can find
that can not be found.
'Cause with all the changes
you've been through
It seems the stranger's always you.
Alone again in some new
Wicked little town.
So when you've got no other choice
You know you can follow my voice
Through the dark turns and noise
Of this wicked little town.
Oh it's a wicked, little town.
Goodbye, wicked little town.
For I did not know.
'Cause I was just a boy
And you were so much more
More than a woman or a man.
And now I understand how much I took from you:
That, when everything starts breaking down,
You take the pieces off the ground
And show this wicked town
something beautiful and new.
Has left you there.
But maybe there's nothing
up in the sky but air.
No cosmic lover preassigned.
There's nothing you can find
that can not be found.
'Cause with all the changes
you've been through
It seems the stranger's always you.
Alone again in some new
Wicked little town.
You know you can follow my voice
Through the dark turns and noise
Of this wicked little town.
Oh it's a wicked, little town.
Goodbye, wicked little town.

This song is a response to Hedwig's own version of Wicked Little Town. Hedwig believes so strongly abstract concepts such as fate and luck and how he has been a victim to both throughout his life. As a result, he is vindictive towards Tommy and believes it is deserved and indignant hatred.
Tommy tries to explain to Hedwig in this version that he was wrong and he admires Hedwig for everything he is and the relationship they had at one point, but Hedwig's philosophies are completely wrong. He insists that Hedwig is looking in the sky for a scapegoat and fate and luck had no part in this:
"You think that Luck Has left you there. But maybe there's nothing up in the sky but air."
and
"And there's no mystical design, No cosmic lover preassigned. There's nothing you can find that can not be found."
By re-using the original "So when you've got no other choice, You know you can follow my voice..." Tommy is trying to show Hedwig that he is now the one in the position to guide, for Hedwig has not only lost a part of him since they were last close, but also lost his way.
Anywho, it's such a great song! The version by The Bens (later to be called Ben Folds Five) is also amazing!
wonderful explination and very painful and true for a lot of people.
I Love This Song.....If you have never heard it you should download it immediatley!! It kinda conforms to any situation having to do with love.....this is much better then Wicked Little Town
This song (and the whole film/play) is, indeed, "something beautiful and new." (I believe "That when everything starts breaking down/You take the pieces off the ground/And show this wicked town something beautiful and new" is the true meaning and inspiration of this whole piece of art to me.)
I suggest listening to this one after "Origin of Love," as this song is about coming to terms with the ideals presented in "Origin." There's also added meaning if you listen to it after the original "Wicked Little Town."
It is also the perfect preamble to "Midnight Radio"--I think this song is the beginning of the merging of the two characters (Hedwig & Tommy), which reaches height in "Midnight Radio". Hedwig is finally saying goodbye to the "wicked little town," and to previous crutches, masks and beliefs--ready to take back what was lost and create something "beautiful and new."
when i watch Hedwig, i cry so much, which is true for many people i believe. but it isn't a bad cry, i don't think.
i think that the first time i cry, it is from hurt, from empathy of the pain Hedwig feels and my personal experiences that come up because of it.
near the very end of the movie though, i suppose the crying becomes a healing thing. i can be redeemed in this movie, like in a way, when hedwig finds himself, i find myself.
if any of you watch the movie with as deep a reserve as i do, i think you can all feel that as well. it's good.
jenovasson: i'm curious to hear what kinds of films you consider to be meaningful, because "hedwig and the angry inch" isn't a movie that can be understood if you just take it at face value... it's so good -because- it has meaning, because the songs do mean something that you obviously are either too lazy or too ignorant to look for.
Damn, you guys take these songs way to seriously, it'as a fucking movie, these songs don't have meanings lmao.
Actually the entire movie is a reference to Plato's Symposium, this movie is about the point of love. But I guess "it'as a fucking movie"
