First of all, there are errors in the lyrics here. It starts:

"Like Chaucer's Canterbury Tales."

The Canterbury Tales (written by Chaucer) were stories narrated through characters identified by their occupations (for the most part, if I recall correctly). Each story relates one of the seven deadly sins (I'm just going off of my memory, I'm not positive on this). Anyway, The Pardoner's Tale, and a pardoner was basically the priest that collects taxes for people to not go to hell, was about Avarice (greed). Three men find a pot of gold and end up killing each other instead of just splitting it up, as they all promised they would.

The song is basically about bad people. "Some people are poison." This is, by far, one of my favorite Rancid songs. The way Tim sings it, it sounds so emotional. Some people are poison. You know when you get the feeling that someone is evil, not just a jerk or "asshole" or bitter, but completely evil, people the will fuck you over out of greed or whatever drives them to hurt others. Those are the people I think the song is about.

"And I'll stare in their eye to annoy them," beautifully said. The implication here is that you can see the evil in their eyes, and they are generally aware of how they are as people, so if you stare in their eye, they will become uncomfortable.

So yeah, just trying to explain what I understand about this song.

Ladies and gentlemen a round of applause for nephos who actually took the time to write the song meaning in songmeanings.net. Not just say, "I love this song, its so cool"

He's right, this song is about people who are comparable to poisin. Poisin, being something that is harmful, can easily be related to a lot of people if they're the type that will hurt someone for personal gain. Or are apathetic to things in a damaging sense. And the like.

One of the best songs on what is, in my opinion, the best Rancid album. I love the backing vocals--sounds like Lars and Freeman--particularly how they counter Tim's "some people are poison" with a "poison" of their own.

It's been five years since the last response, but it would be helpful if someone might confirm if these lyrics are a direct copy of the lyric printed lyrics that came packaged along with the album.
I wonder only because sometimes the lyrics seem remarkably accurate, so much so that it seems unlikely they could have been deciphered by hearing alone.

For instance, I always thought the first verse was something like

i'm living in my own catacomb in a room full of flies and I cant find the gold

however, when listening very carefully and more importantly, knowing what to listen for, it seems the lyrics on this page are, I am fairly certain, what is actually being sung.

But there is one line when things don't match up. It could well be that these are the "correct"/"official" lyrics, and the difference I am hearing is merely a characteristic of the bands performance.

First of all, @Nephos, not only does Tim say "Like CHANCRE's Canterbury Tales", but it's WRITTEN in the lyric book included with the album!

I know the correct author of Canterbury Tales is CHAUCER, and that's probably what Tim meant to say/write but too little, too late I guess.

Second of all, great song, WEAK chorus.

"I'll stare in their eye to annoy them. Yeah, they're poison." Are you serious???
