To me this song is all about going away from somewhere, or from a group, and then coming back to realizee how things have changed, especially in yourself, and how sometimes people want you to go back to the way things were
It seems that much of the song is directed towards one person. I thinkthat she had a romance (perhaps brief) with him. She thought of him as her soul mate. (Everytime you opened your mouth it was my voice that I heard). He dumped or otherwise lost interest in her... . (You led me on.. why don't you finish what you start?)
I think she is waffling between whether she can win him back (I promise I'll never make you wish like it was before), or if it's really dead (It will always be unrequited). It's unclear if she really knows what he wants from her, or what she did wrong.
It's not clear who the larger group is. Is it a group of friend they used to hang out with, but now that this relationship failed, It's awkward hanging out with them?
One thing that's great about the song is she isn't just sitting around moping and feeling sorry for herself. She seems positive, and full of insight - leave the past behind - "the only time is now." He makes you think he's an idiot for not taking her back.
