I always thought that it was a song about anxiety one faces about a relationship and how truthful the significant other is about things.
This song reminds me of "Zombie" by Joyce Carol Oates. I'm pretty sure if you read that it will add a different perspective to this song...I'm not sure if Kinsella read it but it really doesn't matter, he somehow gets into the mind of the main character of that book for me in a way that Oates did in writing it.
I think these lyrics are probably my favourite Tim Kinsella has ever written. The imagery is really great. I'm not certain what it means, but I usually don't when it comes to him.
I'm not sure his lyrics are supposed to make sense most of the time it's just for the flow of the actual sounds of the words. And the imagery. I mean look at some of his Cap'n Jazz lyrics, it's nonsensical but it all flows together so easily that it sounds fucking amazing.
This song is very simple and straightforward in my opinion, which is very surprising of Tim Kinsella. It is a song about jealousy and Tim perhaps being jealous of his lover's past/ex's/hookups and what not.
