Deus Lyrics

Deus does not exist
But if he does
He lives above me
In the fattest largest cloud up there
He is whiter than white and cleaner than clean
He wants to reach me

Deus does not exist
But if he does I always notice him
Getting ready in his airy room
He is picking his gloves so gently off
He wants to touch me

I'm walking humbly down a tiny street
Pulling my collar - it gets bigger

I once met him
It really surprised me
He put me in a bath tub
Made me
Squeeky clean
Really clean

To
Create
A
U-ni-verse
You must
Taste
The forbidden fruit

He said "hi!"
I said "hi!"
I was still clean

Deus does not exist
But if he does he'd want to get
Down from that cloud
First marzipan fingers then marble hands
More silent than silence and slower than slow
Diving towards me

My collar is a huge room for two hands
They start at the chest and move slowly down
Wooo...

I thought I had seen everything
He wasn't white and fluffy
He just had sideburns
He just had sideburns
And a quiff
He said 'hi'
I said 'hi'
I was still clean
I was squeeky clean
I was surprised
Just as you would be

Deus, Deus
Deus, Deus, he does not exist
Deus, Deus...

I really love this song.

I think it's obviously a song about not believing in god, but I like that it sounds so optimistic. To me it's kind of like she's declaring that she doesn't believe in god but is daydreaming about how exciting and magical it would be if he did exist.

To me, it seems like she knows what she believes deep down, but is open to magical things in life and even though this is what she believes, she could be wrong. But in the end, she still believes it;)

This song is just so clean sounding and happy. It sounds carefree and I think that's a really nice change for a song with this subject matter. Kind of like " I don't believe this, but it's just my point of view and it isn't because I'm a bitter person."

This song is so good, I love it. They take something controversial, and maybe offensive to some. And produce such a hit!

The female vocal is fantasising about a with sexual relationship with god. This idea begins ambiguously ("He wants to reach me") but becomes more explicit as the song progresses ("He wants to touch me" and then "must taste the forbidden fruit").

I've neve been sure about the male vocal. It's either a counter-point to the female vocal (that god is cool and classy), or it's a much more subtle version of the female vocal (the sexual connection between god and people).

It is obvious to think that this song is just about a person who does not believe in God. I think it's more subtle. There are, I think, more layers.

Believing or not believing in a God is a universal phenomenon that is referenced and exploited as a basic principle in the lyrics. But I think there's more to it.

This song can be about a certain conquered adoration in a relationship. Possibly because someone has fallen head over heels in love, adores the other beyond measure, perhaps lost control for a moment, and then realizes she is not dealing with a God. She wants to believe in pure love and in the end he's just that standard smooth rock'n'roll guy with a quiff and sideburns. She no longer believes in this God.

On the other hand, it is also possible that it concerns a very questionable power relationship in which a dominant person who pretends to be a God controls a subjugated person via hierarchy (think of pedophilia or other power relations as in metoo situations). The subject person overcomes the power relationship and insists that she does not believe in God. The God who appears so squeeky clean is in fact much more primal as evidenced by his quiff and sideburns, while the subject person is still squeeky clean.

Song Meaning

Fun fact: "Deuce deuce" is American slang for a 22-caliber gun which may refer to: I'll deal with you

Are you sure it's not "He just had sideburns, And a coif"? I love this song, BTW. Bjork is my superhero!

Or maybe not...lol i just realized that a quiff is a hairstyle. I learned something new. All this time I was imagining sideburns & a helmet under chainmail.
