So this has been.my favorite song of OTEP's since it came out in 2004, and I always thought it was a song about a child's narrative of suffering in an abusive Christian home. But now that I am revisiting the lyrics, I am seeing something totally new.
This song could be gospel of John but from the perspective of Jesus.
Jesus was NOT having a good time up to and during the crucifixion. Everyone in the known world at the time looked to him with fear, admiration or disgust and he was constantly being asked questions. He spoke in "verses, prophesies and curses". He had made an enemy of the state, and believed the world was increasingly wicked and fallen from grace, or that he was in the "mouth of madness".
The spine of atlas is the structure that allows the titan to hold the world up. Jesus challenged the state and in doing so became a celebrated resistance figure. It also made him public enemy #1.
All of this happened simply because he was doing his thing, not because of any agenda he had or strategy.
And then he gets scourged (storm of thorns)
There are some plot holes here but I think it's an interesting interpretation.
Sometimes I wish that I was the weather
You'd bring me up in conversation forever
And when it rained I'd be the talk of the day
Oh sometimes, I wish that I was a cold beer
I'd rest assure that you would hold me near
I'd be guaranteed to be just what you need
And there could be no other way 'cause you're so,
you're so lame
Your tired words are all, they're all the same
And I wanna walk, and I'd surely walk away
If I wasnt such a sucker for you
Sometimes I wish that I was a bong hit
You'd let me in and you would love every minute
And tell the room the things I did to you
Oh, And there could be no other way 'cause your so lame
Your tired words are all, your tired words are all the same
And I wanna walk, you know I'd surely walk away
If I wasn't such a sucker for you
I see your world with rosy-colored glasses on
Wanna right what I see wrong
I could never have that power over you
Someday I'm gonna pack up and leave this town
I'm gonna get my own things going on
And when I do, I'll forget about how....
You're so lame,
Your tired words are all the same
I wanna walk, you know I'd walk away
If I wasn't such a sucker for you
I wasn't such a sucker for you
I wasn't such a sucker for you
You'd bring me up in conversation forever

You're so lame,

I wasn't such a sucker for you
I wasn't such a sucker for you

I know exactly how that feels. Another great song by John Mayer (no surprise there). He's amazing. His lyrics are so well done, you can easily relate, which makes the song, aside from it's addictive sound, even more appealing.
