Morningside Lyrics
Morningside
The old man died
And no one cried
They simply turned away
And when he died
He left a table made of nails and pride
And with his hands, he carved these words inside
'For my childen'
Morning light
Morning bright
I spent the night
With dreams that make you weep
Morning time
Wash away the sadness from these eyes of mine
For I recall the words an old man signed
'For my children'
And the legs were shaped with his hands
And the top made of oaken wood
And the children that sat around his table
Touched it with their laughter
Ah, and that was good
Morningside
An old man died
And no one cried
He surely died alone
And truth is sad
For not a children would claim
the gift he had
The words he carved
became his epitaph
'For my children'
The old man died
And no one cried
They simply turned away
And when he died
He left a table made of nails and pride
And with his hands, he carved these words inside
'For my childen'
Morning light
Morning bright
I spent the night
With dreams that make you weep
Morning time
Wash away the sadness from these eyes of mine
For I recall the words an old man signed
'For my children'
And the top made of oaken wood
And the children that sat around his table
Touched it with their laughter
Ah, and that was good
An old man died
And no one cried
He surely died alone
And truth is sad
For not a children would claim
the gift he had
The words he carved
became his epitaph
'For my children'

This song makes me cry everytime that I listen to it. It describes the worst way that anyone can leave this Earth. His voice is a perfect voice on this song as far as I am concerned.
This song is one of the most powerful and moving and beautifully sad songs I've ever heard. It is an unrecognised masterpiece. The live version on the 1972 album "Hot August Night" is truly magnificent and unforgettable. I defy anyone not to be moved by this piece.
Moses is the old man. Moses died, but he left a table (The Torah is often referred to as "The Ready Table". "Made of nails and pride" rules and laws on life. "The legs were made with his hands", he wrote it all with his own hand. "...and the top made of oaken wood", a very hard wood. "...for my children", the "Children of Israel". Every Shabbos the "children" gather around the Torah and laugh and sing, "...and that was good". "The old man died and no one cried," No one said Kaddish for Moshe. "He surely died alone," Moshe died alone. "And the truth is sad, for not a child would claim the gift he had," most of the children of Israel claimed the gift of Torah, and no child of Moshe's became a leader of Israel.
But, what do I know?
Home. I'm going home. Home. OM
My view too! A beautiful song. I love those swelling American strings
I wonder if he had someone in mind when he wrote it. Would make it even sadder
