Does Caroline Know? Lyrics
Maybe when the heat's away you're fine
To put another drink away is out of line
Out of line
So easy with a thief to blame
For breaking every pledge I've made
Does it matter if I can't say Caroline knows?
Every little accident takes time
Forget about mistakes I've made they're left behind
Left behind
So easy with a thief to blame
For breaking every pledge I've made
Does it matter if I can't say Caroline knows?
Caroline knows
So easy with a thief to blame
For breaking every pledge I've made
Does it matter if I can't say
Does it matter if I can't say Caroline knows?
To put another drink away is out of line
Out of line
So easy with a thief to blame
For breaking every pledge I've made
Does it matter if I can't say Caroline knows?
Forget about mistakes I've made they're left behind
Left behind
So easy with a thief to blame
For breaking every pledge I've made
Does it matter if I can't say Caroline knows?
Caroline knows
For breaking every pledge I've made
Does it matter if I can't say
Does it matter if I can't say Caroline knows?

I feel that its about infidelity. The thief can be the other woman or alcohol. It is secret. Caroline the spouse doesnt know about the affair, even though it has been going on for a while(Every little accident takes time). But he wants to be forgiven.
I believe it is about alcoholism. He is the alcoholic and has fallen off the wagon. Caroline is either his wife or his sponsor. Assuming he is with AA then drinking is definitely "out of line" and having another drink would be "breaking every pledge I've made" as being part of a sobriety program involves several pledges. His justification is that the alcohol is a thief that steals his rational thinking. And "does it matter if I can't say Caroline knows?" is more self justification. I believe Mark has written this from an alcoholics viewpoint, but it could just as well be a drug addict. He lost his brother to drug addiction.
