Someone teaching another something. Either to sing, or the singing can be a metaphor fr any other action. Making love could come to mind, possibly. So this person his teaching his soul mate, and he loves to hear the praise sung by the reward of this learning experience. But the pupil isn't always able to grasp the process, and it only comes when the teacher 'grasps the right' way to educate, and thus the pupil has finally 'tried' properly.

The learner needs extra support and to be pressured by another to succeed for each trial given. He can give enough of an effort, but is unable to give it his all. And eventually, he will trip and stumble along the way.

But the fall is learning experience in the end. The teacher now loves to hear this beautiful singing along with the crowd, and the learner has finally found the key to his/her enlightenment.

the lyrics of the 1997 greatest hits album are slightly different: 'sometimes a touch charade/finally you change' and 'along along among the crowd'. on the other hand, mark hollis does appear to sing 'along along along the crowd'.
