Nightblindness Lyrics
A million to one outsiders
Night blindness
Can't see your bright eyes - or what the time is
Twenty five past eternity
Here listening to the sirens
Coming closer, now further away
What we gonna do when the money runs out?
I wish that there was something left to say
How we gonna find the eyes to see a brighter day?
I'm sick of all the same old answers
Lost chances, cold stones
Propping mountains up on matchsticks
Dragging baskets full of bones
And honey please don't stop your talking
Cos there's a feeling won't leave me alone
What we gonna do when the money runs out?
I wish that there was something I could say
How we gonna find the eyes to see a brighter day?
What we gonna do when the money runs out?
I wish that there was something left to say
How we gonna find the eyes to see a brighter day
A brighter day
A brighter day
Night blindness
Can't see your bright eyes - or what the time is
Twenty five past eternity
Coming closer, now further away
I wish that there was something left to say
How we gonna find the eyes to see a brighter day?
Lost chances, cold stones
Propping mountains up on matchsticks
Dragging baskets full of bones
Cos there's a feeling won't leave me alone
I wish that there was something I could say
How we gonna find the eyes to see a brighter day?
I wish that there was something left to say
How we gonna find the eyes to see a brighter day
A brighter day

Propping mountains up On matchsticks Dragging baskets Full of bones
I really like these analogies to a 'bad' romance.
"propping up mountains on matchsticks": Sounds like some past relationships I've had. Things get way too serious while having such a weak foundation (matchsticks)
"Dragging baskets full of bones": Two people come together "dragging" so much baggage. Instead of confronting it, they keep moving forward while it follows them.
In the live version of the song off the the draw the line album there is another verse that goes something like this. It's a little hard to tell whats being said at times and I cant find the lyrics anywhere online, or in the CD. I think it's an describes the aftermath.
Now the streets are full of voices, white horses, cold chills, I don't believe I could tell Don't believe I every will check the latter disciple Moving in now for the kill
Where were you when I needed you? where you when I needed, where were you when i needed you? Living it up, laughing it up, living it up, Living it up, laughing it up, laughing it up, living it up, Other side of the world, or nowhere at all?
@conk good try I reckon. Have you seen the ones here? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B0h1thhzUwQ

One of the most beautiful songs ever sung. It makes me think of cold nights in college drinking tea while thinking of fading love. "Nightblindness" makes me want to cry from loneliness every time I hear it.
An amazingly beautiful song and one of David Gray's best.I was conastantly listening to this song before my dad passed away while he was sick.It was a perfect companion for my feelings of loneliness and helplessness.
this song reminds me of wen i was on a long car journy, in the dark n rain, lookin out the window. it was the perfect song, and i think its about holding on to the one thing you have left when everything else is falling apart.
I thought this quote was different
Hear you listening To the silence Coming closer Now further away
I think it should be Hear you listening To the SIRENS Coming closer Now further away
Beautiful song nonetheless. I love David Gray and his voice. The only person that comes close is Damien Rice and I love him on his own terms.
Seemingly fantastic taste in music there wrineha2. I would say that this song is about how during the night time when one is with a lover, the situation seems much better and is almost unreal whereas when the morning arrives its clear instantly "your bright eyes are what the time is " that reality is upon them, and everything, isnt in fact all well. Gray seems to be unable to hold back on his feelings when the song opens up , and this tune perfectly illustrates how it feels to delude yourself into believing that everthing is fine, and then failing to cope when the real situation is realised.
Wrineha2 is correct...it is "Sirens" according to White Ladder's CD booklet.
To me, this song is about all the problems in a relationship, financially, but also with a relationship (Propping mountains up, On matchsticks), and the temporary solutions. The night can hide these problems, but it's temporary.
Then again, if you want a creative spin on it, it's about two lovers who are also murders that are wanted, and who spend their nights running from cops, listening for sirens, and hiding bodies. And they're running out of money to live on, so they might have to turn themselves in because they're starting to realize that they can't live in hiding forever. Of course, that's just my over-active imagination talking...
It's probably just about a relationship going through a down and out time but to me it's a perfect description of how you feel through addiction and the helplessness, despair and day to day living, a million to one outsiders don't stand much chance of making it but outsiders also stick together, nightblindness, can't see any way out or any hope, what we gonna do when the money runs out, where we gonna find the eyes to see a brighter day is the sick feeling of worry through it all, so I'm sick of all the same old answers, propping mountains up on matchsticks, like I'm trying to keep it all together but it's going to come crashing down around me, dragging baskets full of bones, and I'm carrying this old weight around with me all the time, honey dont stop your talking cause there's a feeling won't leave me alone, keep my mind off of all this cause I've a bad feeling.. this song understands me when I listen to it.. just how I feel about it, that's all
