Joy To The World Lyrics

Jeremiah was a bull frog
Was a good friend of mine
I never understood a single word he said
But I helped him a-drink his wine
And he always had some mighty fine wine

Singin'
{Refrain}
Joy to the world
All the boys and girls, now
Joy to the fishes in the deep blue sea
Joy to you and me

If I were the King of the world
Tell you what I'd do
I'd throw away the cars and the bars and the wars
And make sweet love to you

Sing it now
{Refrain}

You know I love the ladies
Love to have my fun
I'm a high night flier and a rainbow rider
And a straight-shooting son of a gun
I said a staight shootin son of a gun

I thought it was "Throw away the cars, and the laws, and the wars" I like that better. I like bars.

@kaleidoscopeeyes8 If you're still out there: listen to the original Hoyt Axton version. It's definitely "bars", but...

It's the same thing. Lawyers have to pass "the bar exam". In many countries, they're called "barristers" (not to be confused with "baristas").

@BabyM I have a thesis about this, it's not a hot take really and I have no idea if it's accurate. The lyrics are kinda nonsense, so I wonder if he wrote the music and just fit the lyrics to them.

Yes this is a fun song to sing loud in crowds, every one just seems to have to join in. I got to see them in concert a few years ago and they left the stage for a bit with out having sung this song, and every one in the audience started singing it, they came back out and were like "So every one now its time for the frog song!" That was one hell of a fun concert, gosh, I would have been in like eighth grade at the time and have been out of high school for two years, so its been a while but WOW lol.

@MayorMenley I've seen them a couple times, and they clearly still love what they're doing and put on a great show.

A brilliant song... so liberating. =)

I have to disagree about the claim that the song has "no meaning", although I can agree that almost anybody can relate to it. The song has soo much meaning; it's incredible.

Strange enough, apparently the song was INTENDED to be 'nonsensical'. According to wikipedia, "Axton [the song writer] wanted to convince his record producers to record a new melody he had written and the producers asked him to sing anything for words. He sat down and put these words to the tune."

Now, either I am simply over-analyzing the song [which is a silly proposition =)] or Axton was more musically inclined than the site credits him for. If you read the lyrics and listen to how they are projected, you can't possible believe it was written to accompany the melody. It has so much passion; you can really understand and relate to the 'hippie' idea whether you experienced during the time period or not.

The song was released in 1974 during the epidemy of the 'Hippie Era' during the Vietnam War [1965-1973]. Ironically, the original band was active from 1968 to 1975; obviously the war very much influenced the band.

What I love most about the song is how it is delivered... any song can have good lyrics but if it is sang without emotion, it is essentially meaningless. I love this song because you can feel the energy of the band, and it's a wholelotta fun. =D

...About the religious references... it's an interesting perspective. I realized that Jeremiah was a significant figure in the bible [although I highly doubt he was a 'bullfrog' ;)], but I never connected the 'king of the world' to 'god'. I don't believe that the bands' objective was religious, but it's a neat theory.

...now I'm feeling silly for all of this analyzation. The song really speaks for itself =)

"Joy to the fishes in the deep blue sea, joy to you and me" --love it!

I've always loved this song because it's just so bouncy and happy and CATCHY! Don't know about the religious aspect of the lyrics (certainly possible, but I'm the least knowledgeable person around when it comes to that sort of thing) but it has such a positive message, you know? Everyone can sing along and be joyful.

Not to mention, it's the song Scully chooses to sing to Mulder in 'Detour' on The X-Files...

This is literally the only song my late wife would sing at karaoke, To this day, I have no idea why.

The first time she did it was at a karaoke place that used the old Pioneer LaserDisc karaoke, so every song had a weird background video. Part of the video for JttW was a man in a frog costume dancing in an amusement park.

I miss you, Christine.
