Sugarcube Lyrics
Whatever you want from me
Whatever you want I'll do
Try to squeeze a drop of blood
From a sugarcube
Try to be more assured
Try to be more right there
Try to be less uptight
Try to be more aware
Whatever you want from me
Is what I want to do for you
Sweeter than a drop of blood
From a sugarcube
And though I like to act the part of being tough
I crumble like a sugarcube for you
Whatever you want from me
Whatever you want I'll do
And I will try
Whatever you want from me
Whatever you want I'll do
Try to squeeze a drop of blood
Squeeze a drop of blood
From a sugarcube
Whatever you want I'll do
Try to squeeze a drop of blood
From a sugarcube
Try to be more right there
Try to be less uptight
Try to be more aware
Is what I want to do for you
Sweeter than a drop of blood
From a sugarcube
I crumble like a sugarcube for you
Whatever you want I'll do
And I will try
Whatever you want I'll do
Try to squeeze a drop of blood
Squeeze a drop of blood
From a sugarcube

The title is a play on the adage, "you can't get blood from a stone", meaning that, some things are impossible, no matter how hard you try. You certainly can't get blood from a sugarcube.
The lover in the song wants to be less uptight, more assured, more in the present moment, more aware, but the the harder you work at those things, the the harder it is to achieve them. In order to be truly assured and cool and confident, you need to let go. Trying really hard will get you nowhere.
No wonder the lover is crumbling before his beloved -- he's working so hard to achieve a futile goal. Men and women alike are notorious for rejecting would-be lovers who try too hard to win them over. Playing hard to get is all about appearing as if you don't NEED your lover...even if you really really want them.
But the effort, no matter how difficult and exhausting, is sweet to the lover in this song...because he's just so infatuated with his beloved that it barely even matters to him if he "wins". He just wants his beloved to be happy, and he'll do anything to achieve that. Even if the goal is futile, the journey is sweet.
This song expresses, for me, the very essence of love: giving yourself to the other one. In love you want to be anything you can to make the other one feel good, to give that person exactly what he/she needs. But it doesn't mean to deny yourself of to erase your identity.
When you love, everything you do for the other person, you're doing it for yourself.
i love the simile they used: i crumble like a sugarcube for you. this song is basically about someone who would do anything the significant other and change themselves for them.
I don't know why people still bother to make pop songs - Yo La Tengo already perfected it with this song in my eyes.
This was the song that introduced me to Yo La Tengo... more specifically, through their video clip.
My favourite bits in the video clip are:
I really love the dissonant guitar solo.
"I really love the dissonant guitar solo"
DITTO!
same here... love this song
in the video it's the cast of mr. show along with ylt. the teachers are david cross and bob odenkirk. song's great too.
