Mourning Air Lyrics

Did I see a moment with you
In a half lit world
I'm frightened to believe
But I must try
If I stumble if I fall
I'm reaching out in this mourning air, ohh

Have I got the strength to ask
Beyond the window
I feel this fear alone
Until we have
Total honesty
If I tremble or fall
I'm reaching out in this mourning air, ohh

Should I feel a moment with you
To softly whisper
I crave nothing else so much
Longing to reveal
Total honesty
I can feel your touch
I'm reaching out in this mourning air, ohh

I think it's more about infatuation and taking the chance of acting on it vs. remaining in isolation and grief from an unnamed hurt/tragedy. The horns in the song soften the darkness and give it an almost, very subtle risque sort of vibe amid the swirling darkness.

this song makes me think of this person that I hung out with once out of our usual environment and it was amazing... but I'm not really sure about anything becoming of it, although its possible.. "did I see a moment with you, in a half lit world?" And I really want to tell this person how I feel but it'll scare them away ...I think this is one of those songs that can apply to pretty much anything.

Same...it's those weird, out-of-your-element moments with people that make you take a step back and wonder how different things could be if only this were your element. And then, it's fucking heartbreaking to slip back into the norm.

I think yes it's about the morning after the night before, and she's not sure she stands with this guy, but she's too scared to ask.

"I feel this fear alone Until we have Total honesty"

It's about not talking about things or where you stand with each other etc and wanting to find out, but being afraid to.

This song to me is about wanting the forbidden. its about reaching out for something beyond whats comfortable "beyond the window". What is our side of the window is home beyond it is the possibility of the unknown. To me the narrator is emotively lead verging on obsession, she can not see the logic of her actions as she can not necessarily see a life with who she refers to "half lit world" but she wishes to be true to herself which is evident by the fact that she is willing to endure hardship for what she craves "if i stumble or if i fall". In essence the song refers to a forbidden relationship in which she craves and wishes to touch upon but fears that she is alone in her feelings.

My Opinion

@Thimble101 excellent explanation and I agree

this song is about being in love with some one whom you are not sure loves you back, you've already slept with him and now its the morning, you dont know him well but you want honesty and you let him know how you feel! no matter if you fall!~

It's obviously about something dying, such as mourning. THe song is about a loss, that seems like maybe it's not to be spoken of, or it's not supposed to be recognized. She wants to release it, be honest about it, probably look at it in a real perspective. Definetly not about love though.

I think this song is about waking up in the morning and realizing that you're not going to be with the one you truly love. You dream about them and feel so close to them in your dream, but when you wake up, they are no where to be found and they are no where near you. Hence, mourning air. Mourning their lose in the morning.

the play between the brass and beth's voice is insanely haunting. i can't pick a favourite portishead song, but this one definitely gets repeated several times before i move on to "only you".
