Eldorado Lyrics

There's a man-sized Eldorado, Hooved a doo
and who could blame him. Where we going?
What's the ticket? Just the mention of Berlin makes me sexy
and tired of thinking about drinking
for thinking of drinking while thinking
about drinking and thinking about drinking
It's man-sized inside

Look in here it's all hardwood.
What's that smell? Smells like coffee
If you regret it please say something,
I've got no genius for evil that makes me common
and tired of loving, recovering, loving, recoveringlovingrecovering
recovering. It's man-sized inside.

There's a man sized - Eldorado, whoopty-do
if you can't take it. Where he's going?
What's that ticking?
Just the mention of Berlin makes me sexy
and tired of thinkingaboutdrinkingforthinking
ofdrinkingwhilethinkingaboutdrinkingandthinkingaboutdrinking.
Tired of lovingrecoveringlovingrecoveringlovingrecoveringloving
recovering.
It's man-sized inside. It's man-sized inside.

eldorado: an imaginary place of great wealth and opportunity

so if it's man-sized, it would only exist in the mind..

This is the best song the Hip has ever written. In my Opinion. But There are many great songs. I've never heard a bad Hip song

It sounds really nonsensical, like it was written under the influence of Labatt Blue and Jack Daniels. Damn good song by the by.

So, I've loved this song since I was a kid. I always thought that "Berlin" was "Her name" growing up, but once I realized it was "Berlin" I couldn't help but think it wasn't about some dude drinking over a lost love, but rather JFK. Maybe the drinking part is an allusion to the drinking problems that have plagued the Kennedy family? The "loving recovering" a reference to his many alleged affairs? "What's that ticking", a grim reminder of how short his life was? "Look in here it's all hardwood. ... It's a man-sized inside." Is this not obviously the coffin?

I know it's not a very Canadian interpretation, but I think it's one that could be made to fit.

My Interpretation

It's likely about Eldorado, Ontario. They make many references to Canadian towns...

For me, this is about an alcoholic. An eldorado is a fish - referring to the saying drinks like a fish. The cycle of 'loving, recovering' is the drinking cycle, the drunk-sober cycle. Perhaps the hard-wood, smells like the coffee verse is a rehab, where introspection occurs. How good is Downie! So many ways to interpret his songs.
