Crown Lyrics
Who's gonna be my savior
Now that I've learned to believe
Who's gonna be the answer
To all of my questioning
Well I hope I'm not lost
But I think that hope is now distancing
And the words that secure a cause
Are now faint whisperings
Who's gonna wear my crown
Who's gonna wear my crown
I don't know I just might alone
Who's gonna wear my crown
Who's gonna wear my crown
I don't know, I've just got to go my way
Who's gonna be my partner
Now that I stand here alone
Who's gonna be the shepherd
To lead this poor boy back home
Well I hope I'm not lost
But I think that hope is now distancing
And the words that secure a cause
Are now faint whisperings
Who's gonna wear my crown
Who's gonna wear my crown
I don't know I just might alone
Who's gonna wear my crown
Who's gonna wear my crown
I don't know, I've just got to go my way
[Solo]
Who's gonna wear my crown
Who's gonna wear my crown
I don't know, I just might alone
Who's gonna wear my crown
Who's gonna wear my crown
I don't know, I just got to go...
Now that I've learned to believe

I remember hearing a while back this was written for Ed and Dean's father. It makes sense. I want to see a clip of CS playing it in Atlanta in dedication to Ed and Dean's father. I heard that a picture of their father was displayed on a screen in the background as they played. That would be the most amazing performance anyone could do. Perform a beautiful song in tribute to their father. Amazing.
While there are two bits of heavily religious imagery, I think there's another interpretation, at least, that could be gotten from the song.
Just before playing this song in Atlanta on the Youth tour, the lead singer said, "This is for my father." While drawing meaning from something besides the lyrics can be misleading, after he said that, the imagery I got from the song was of him missing his father for one reason or another, or missing the childhood he spent with him, or something of that sort. (I don't know much about the band - I just recently started listening to them seriously, so I hope you'll forgive me if I don't really know anything at all about the singer.)
Of course, it could have just been a sort of "This singing of this in particular is to honor my father" bit, for all I know. But, after he said that, it was the image that came to mind.
Losing faith in Jesus Christ, thus feeling alone. I think.
It sounds to me that he's losing faith, but he still believes, he needs to be alone to go and think and ask questions about what he believes.
It's a pretty obvious one. It's basically about a boy who believes in the lord, but even though this is the case he still feels the need for guidance in life via a mentor or priest to lead him in life and give him advise whenever he needs. And he feels that by not having one he's slowly losing his trust in what he he's doing, since he doesn't have any guidance to make him feel confident that his actions are correct.
i have a different take on this one.
there's a friend of his he's look up to for awhile, maybe a role model, maybe someone he idolized, and that person just fuckin proved themslves to be a fuckin douchebag. so he's just sittin there shattered and wonderin what to do.
like the leader of a gang or something. they have to be charismatic. but at some point one of the kids might question what are they doin.
its certainly a song about questionin thats for sure. and its certainly somethin that you've taken for granted. that suddenly seems to be unworthy. and so youre just wonderin. and in a way its about growin up. because in the end the guy says, "or i might go alone".
to me thats how this song resonates.
In thier Live DVD, called home, Ed says the song is dedicated to his dad and at the end of the song they show a photo of his dad with his YoB and YoD. His father was an ordained minister and was quite close to him and I assumed was a big influence on him, hence the line, Who's gonna wear my crown. It's a reference to Jesus wearing a crown of thorns to atone for our sins. It's a great line.

I was at the show in Atlanta. Our son played in the ASYO. Ed did say it was for his father, and if I'm not mistaken, his father was a minister. They showed his picture on the screen and I believe it said "Rev." I could be wrong. But my interpretation was that Ed couldn't follow his father's footsteps into the ministry, but yet felt he still had a "ministry" of sorts, through music. And this was his way of explaining that to his father.
in my opinion as a massive music lover every artist has their own real meanings behind every song or else they wouldnt write it. i think the beauty of a good band and good song writing with meaningful lyrics is for each individual person to find their own meaning behind each song and thats what they really hope people get outta their music so every comment on this page is right. my idea on this song and the way it feels to me is that in my situation my ex girlfriend wont let me see my little baby boy and i sure do miss him. hes 2 months old and hes everything to me and she has him around some new guy and i wonder if shes trying to get him to think the new guys his dad hence the part where their saying whos gonna wear my crown. another part is with everything going on in my life i just feel lost anymore i used to have great things, a great job and lots of good things but its all been taken away and now i have nothing. i dont even have my own bedroom cause ive been saving it for my son for when i get him he can have his own room i sleep in a chair every night and wonder where my life went...thats how this song hits me. sorry that was a bit long
For the longest time after my dad died, this song would make me cry. >< Feelz.
I know songs mean different things to different people but I believe Ed wrote this for his late father who he is missing. Sound like he idolized him and doesn't know who is going to be his idol now that his father has passed. I too lost my father and I cry everytime I hear this song. The clip playing with the orchestra is just the best. LOVE this group !
