Memphis Time Lyrics
Hey, now it's all right
Hey now, it's fine, it's cool
Seems we've done our worst
It's time to head for school
And so we tripped upstairs
I seen the sun come up
Judging by your shape
I think you've had enough
It's Memphis time
Just string that old guitar
Tune it up to Memphis time
Hey, now I couldn't know
Baby, I couldn't tell
Just what's going on
Inside of someone else
You know that this small world
Sometimes this big town
It can drag you up
As well as drag you down
It's Memphis time
Just string that old guitar
Tune it up to Memphis
You can't say that I've been right
I can't say that you've been wrong
We knew it all along
(Take cover Scotty)
So we tripped upstairs
I seen the sun come up
Judging by your shape
I think you've enough
It's Memphis time
Just string that old guitar
And tune it up to Memphis time...
Hey now, it's fine, it's cool
Seems we've done our worst
It's time to head for school
And so we tripped upstairs
I seen the sun come up
Judging by your shape
I think you've had enough

Tune it up to Memphis time
Hey, now I couldn't know

The only country song I've heard them do. Not my thing, but he seems to do a good job at it.
If it's the only one you've heard I don't think you've listened to New Miserable Experience.
It's another song making fun of country music.
Or you can literalize it and say it's a song about drinking on a school night.
I disagree with the comment that this is "miserable, edge-of-suicide" music." Obviously that is a matter of opinion but when I listen to this band I can't help but be in an upbeat mood. It is true that some bands that are labeled "grunge" have some depressing songs, but I really don't feel that way about a majority of bands. Overall I would rather hear a good song that has meaning (whether is is "depressing" or not) than a meaningless pop tune.
Also I really don't think the sole purpose of the song is to make fun of country music. I feel it is a legitimate attempt to show the band's versatility. They were probably influenced by country music as well as rock. I used to hate country music... until I actually listened to it.
I haven't heart New Miserable Experience, which is most likely their best album. But I'm not going to buy it because I've grown up and don't really want to indulge in the miserable, edge-of-suicide sort of music anymore. Gin Blossoms music is good but try not to listen too closely to what they are saying or they'll bring you right down with them...
