So this has been.my favorite song of OTEP's since it came out in 2004, and I always thought it was a song about a child's narrative of suffering in an abusive Christian home. But now that I am revisiting the lyrics, I am seeing something totally new.
This song could be gospel of John but from the perspective of Jesus.
Jesus was NOT having a good time up to and during the crucifixion. Everyone in the known world at the time looked to him with fear, admiration or disgust and he was constantly being asked questions. He spoke in "verses, prophesies and curses". He had made an enemy of the state, and believed the world was increasingly wicked and fallen from grace, or that he was in the "mouth of madness".
The spine of atlas is the structure that allows the titan to hold the world up. Jesus challenged the state and in doing so became a celebrated resistance figure. It also made him public enemy #1.
All of this happened simply because he was doing his thing, not because of any agenda he had or strategy.
And then he gets scourged (storm of thorns)
There are some plot holes here but I think it's an interesting interpretation.
Well she was
Clearly nervous
She asked me if I would drive
And I noticed
Then I knew
She had been drinking
And I always could
Read between the lines
There she was
Clearly nervous
Because there was something
That I had neglected
I was obvious
She could see right through me
Then we made love, ya we made love
So unprotected
Now here we are
It? a New Pop Sunday
We went too far
And now you?e gone
The brightest star
On my darkest Monday
Now here we are
It? a New Pop Sunday
Well she was
Clearly nervous
And I noticed she had
Something on her mind
But I was cool
Yeah I was cool
I knew what was coming
But doctors ain? really
Hard to find
Now here we are
It? a New Pop Sunday
We went too far
And now you?e gone
The brightest star
On my darkest Monday
Now here we are
Forever gone
Forever gone
Clearly nervous
She asked me if I would drive
And I noticed
Then I knew
She had been drinking
And I always could
Read between the lines
There she was
Clearly nervous
Because there was something
That I had neglected
I was obvious
She could see right through me
Then we made love, ya we made love
So unprotected
Now here we are
It? a New Pop Sunday
We went too far
And now you?e gone
The brightest star
On my darkest Monday
Now here we are
It? a New Pop Sunday
Well she was
Clearly nervous
And I noticed she had
Something on her mind
But I was cool
Yeah I was cool
I knew what was coming
But doctors ain? really
Hard to find
Now here we are
It? a New Pop Sunday
We went too far
And now you?e gone
The brightest star
On my darkest Monday
Now here we are
Forever gone
Forever gone

Great song. It is the same as Mekron Bomb and has almost all of the same lyrics. Mekron Bomb was a single that I believe was released in Japan during the release of Wax Ecstatic. I'm not sure why the title was changed before it was released on their third album, I'd be interested in learning more about that.

I don't really like this song, but maybe it's because I don't quite get it. It seems as though he ignored her cries for him to drive, so they crashed and she died. I guess the underlying theme is that neglect leads to unstable relationships?
I always thought it was about the couple getting an abortion and then not being able to cope with the fallout from it and breaking up. The lines about unprotected sex and the doctors aren't really hard to find is where I glean this from but sometimes I have a habit of taking a few lines and concocting a story from them. This is definitely a song of regret.
primus77 I totally agree...New POP Sunday - Pop as in father. The guy in the song just become a new pop. She was nervous because of "something I had neglected" - a condom. Then they made love unprotected. She tells him she is pregnant, but he's cool because he knows it's just a phone call to a clinic to take care of the "problem"
