Say You'll Be There Lyrics

Say you'll be there
I'm giving you everything all that joy
can bring this I swear

Last time that we had this conversation
I decided we should be friends
Yeah,
but now we're going round in circles,
tell me will this deja vu never end? Oh
Now you tell me that you've fallen in love,
well I never ever thought that would be
This time you gotta take it easy
throwing far too much emotions at me
But any fool can see they're falling,
I gotta make you understand

I'm giving you everything all that joy can bring this I swear
(I give you everything)
And all that I want from you is a promise you will be there
Say you will be there (Say you will be there)
Won't you sing it with me

If you, put two and two together
you will see what our friendship is for (Oh)
If you can't work this equation then
I guess I'll have to show you the door
There is no need to say you love me,
It would be better left unsaid

I'm (I'm) giving you everything (I give you everything)
all that joy can bring this I swear (yes I swear)
and (and) all that I want from you (all I want from you) is a promise
(is a promise) you will be there
Yeah, I want you

Any fool can see they're falling,
gotta make you understand

I'll give you everything on this I swear
Just promise you'll always be there
I'm giving you everything (I m giving you everything)
all that joy (all that joy can bring) can bring this I
swear (yes I swear)
and all that I want from you (all that I want from you) is a promise
(I want you to promise you'll) you
will be there (always be there)

I'm giving you everything (I m giving you everything)
all that joy (all that joy can bring) can bring this I swear (yes I swear)
and all that I want from you (all that I want from you) is a promise
(I want you to promise you'll)
you will be there (always be there)

i always thought this song was about a girl's friend with benefits that is falling in love with her. (if you put two and two together you will see what our friendship is for) she's giving him "everything" so all she wants is for him to be ok with their relationship (last time that we had this conversation i decided we should be friends) and be there for her. the spice girls are all about girl power! in most media, its the girls that fall in love with boys in a "friends with benefits" relationship, and i feel like the spice girls were sticking a middle finger up at that stereotype. the femdom themes/dudes in bondage in the music video reaffirm this theory for me, anyways! its just my opinion though!!!

My Interpretation

@cofffin @cofffin couldn't agree more! I was 10 when this came out and I've always loved the music and had the lyrics stuck in my head, but only now, about 20 years later do I actually get what they're singing about; now that I'm involved in an unhealthy relationship with the most beautiful and charming woman in the world, and she just keeps pushing me away because she hasn't got the time right now...but I'm madly in love with her. so I guess I just used to think that this song was indeed about a friend that's somewhat bothering this girl with...

I don't think the girl in question is contradictory at all, nor is the guy really. She basically rejected this guy because he was giving her a headache with his lack of ability to commit. She decided, ya know what? Let's just be friends. It's not worth me fretting over (she seems perfectly content to move on). He keeps coming back to her because, naturally, he's falling in LOVE (she's a f**king Spice Girl, how could he not?), but he doesn't want to pay the price (which is to make a commitment). She's like: look, I'll give you everything I've got and then some, but you'd have to meet me halfway (commit), or else game over.

It's like, if you negotiate a price with a vendor and the vendor says I won't go lower than $40, you decide to walk from it, and then you can't get it out of your head, so you come back and ask if they'll go any lower and they won't–the salesperson says "look, it's a great item, I will even throw in [insert relevant item], I promise you it's amazing, but I'm not going lower than $40." Is either person being contradictory?

I think it goes perfectly with their general "girl power" message.

A girl feels this boy who's just friends with her but wants to make it more is rushing it. Then the girl contradicts herself by saying that she'll give it everything she's got as long as he will always be there for her and her alone.

i find it hilarious that this is the song i can most relate to right now. this girl im involved with tells me she just wants to be friends, but then she wants me to be like her best friend and always be there for her which sucks for me.
