Halo Of Ashes Lyrics
She wears a halo of ashes
Spectre on the wind
Waits on me so patiently
I no longer can pretend
Sky lies a thousand mile below
Stars shine and the moon is clear
With nothing i can only warn
Won't you be left near here
I been a long long time away
With one foot in the grave
Glorified in the dying of the sun
My angel pulls me closer
As my poison she crawls thru
Walks with me so silently
I no longer can refuse
Tomorrow my thousand miles behind
Starshine and the moon below
Wake me where you find me
Pretend you don't know
I been a long long time away...(repeat)
She wears a halo of ashes
Spectre on the wind
Waits on me so patiently
I no longer can pretend
Tomorrow my thousand miles behind
Face painted in the moon below
Wake me where you find me
Pretend you don't know
I been a long long time away...(repeat 2x)
Spectre on the wind
Waits on me so patiently
I no longer can pretend
Stars shine and the moon is clear
With nothing i can only warn
Won't you be left near here
With one foot in the grave
Glorified in the dying of the sun
As my poison she crawls thru
Walks with me so silently
I no longer can refuse
Starshine and the moon below
Wake me where you find me
Pretend you don't know
Spectre on the wind
Waits on me so patiently
I no longer can pretend
Face painted in the moon below
Wake me where you find me
Pretend you don't know
I been a long long time away...(repeat 2x)

Ooh, looks like I'm the first to comment. This song is so catchy, it really shows the talent of Mark Lanegan. This song has a sort of mystical streak running through it, and not forgeting the nice grungy riff.
The song is most likely about a girl, and how he is a long long time away, as in so distant from her emotionally.
I think the "she" in this song is an avatar of death.
the mystical side is provided by an electric sitar. i watched a live performance of it on youtube.
I know the Screaming Trees were more psychedelic than grunge, but I have no idea their history of drug use... I always pictured this song as being about dropping acid with a girl or something xD either way I love this song, it's the song that got my into them and still remains my favorite Screaming Trees song.
after listening to the 12 hour youtube video of mark's memoirs of his life, which is mostly a never ending battle with severe drug addiction, i can confidently say the "she" who is wearing the halo of ashes is either drugs, or the self-destructive life....but seeing how intensely he was addicted to drugs, i would say it's drugs. he's comparing the fleeting pleasure of drugs to an angel tempting him, but her halo is ashes, not something actually glorious....ashes obviously represent death....drugs are his angel of death.
