It's about being being forced to be alone because of an addiction. You eventually become so isolated that you can't have anything and no one else truly knows what it's like. Trying to have a relationship with someone else or with anything is always ruined, but there's still a person alive inside suffering. Alone. That part that still wants all those good things, but knows they can never have them.
Actually it doesn't mean that at all. Please don't think I'm retarded. I was having one of the worst days of my life.
I think that you have some of it right, not sure about the drug addiction but I am pretty certain it is about a person's problem with their loneliness. All of their life they have become this person and have constantly run away from their problems and no one knows who he really is.
Since I am crazy and fucked up, I interpret this song to be about sexual assault. Of course, my psycho brain is probably just twisting the song to fit my own situation.
To ME, this song has always been about the horror and isolation of addiction. I had a crush on a woman who confided in me that she was an alcoholic, and for me, this was HER song. Every line, every word, echoed her situation. It used to make me tear up hearing it. I loved this woman as a dear, dear friend (and probably more), and this song crushed me each time I heard it.
