Everything Means Nothing to Me

It's hard to care about anything sometimes at the depths of depression because it seems like nothing you do or value means anything at all. It's apathy, and when you start to lose all meaning in everything you start to feel like the hollow shell of a person instead. Nothing holds any meaning, nothing you do matters. It's nihilism, apathy and loneliness. The feeling that nothing you will ever do will fix anything and so everything is meaningless.

one of the simple songs in life that yet has so much complexity.

i Just read in spin magazine that he wrote this song right after he had carved the word "now" into his arm with a knife, and he jsut sat down at the piano with blood still dripping from his arm and wrote the whole thing. its pretty much about pressure from all aspects of his life and wanting to just live in the moment.

When I hear the song, I always think that the word 'everything' is more like the concept of having it all and growing up to all of life's expectations. 'Everything' could be having a great career and a spouse... the things that society says you're supposed to have by a certain point. Everything = success So he's saying that he doesn't feel that he's a failure because he didn't live up to what everyone wants him to be because 'everything' means nothing to him.

i also heard that he wrote it following friends telling him to think about the future, thus carving now into his arm and writing the song.

I think in the first verse the statue is him performing to a crowd "attention looking back," and while maybe this is what he's always wanted, there's a voice inside him (the blue song bird) telling him that none of this really means anything to him.

I think the song is about loneliness; life is about relations between individuals, and once you step into the shade or hold distance to the people you care about, everything is just pure random movement around you. It doesn't take any shape or form until you have somebody to discuss the world with. 22 years today since Elliott left us. Sorely missed.

this song is so amazing because the deep description that he goes through on these seemingly pointless things represent his lack of interest for things that people think actually matter. the song is captivating, especially the end: the constant repetition of the phrase "everything means nothing to me" while the music uplifts the listener into his little psyche...
