The Water Is Wide Lyrics

The water is wide
I can't cross over
And neither have
I wings to fly
Build me a boat
That can carry two
And both shall row
My love and I

There is a ship
And she sails the sea
She's loaded deep
As deep can be
But not so deep
As the love I'm in
I know not how
I sink or swim

Oh love is handsome
And love is fine
The sweetest flower
When first it's new
But love grows old
And waxes cold
And fades away
Like Summer dew

Build me a boat
That can carry two
And both shall row
My love and I
And both shall row
My love and I

I believe this song is suggesting that "distance makes the heart grow fonder" is a myth. That over time love fades away. I believe the singer is in another land awaiting the promised arrival of his/her sweetheart.

The singer suggests they fear the distance between them will cause a loss of feeling on the part of their love and wishes for a boat to cross the water and be reunited.

This song, while great as performed by James Taylor, was not written by James Taylor. It's an old Scottish traditional. Many people have performed this song, its lyrics evolving over time.

Ya know what's really ironic, guys? The whole version shows that it's about a false lover. THe guy goes away, and doesn't come back. One of my favorites, but not something you'd want to play at a wedding...

This song was actually my childhood lullabye, so it touches a special place in my heart. It is really such a beautiful sentiment about love, any kind of love.
